George Murray Levick was the physician on Robert Falcon Scott's tragic Antarctic expedition of 1910. Marooned for an Antarctic winter, Levick passed the time by becoming the first man to study penguins up close. Deutschland im Mai 1945. Der Krieg ist verloren: Trümmer und Ruinenfelder, so weit das Auge reicht. Während die Alliierten den Sieg feiern, suchen russische Spezialeinheiten in Berlin nach den Überresten von Feind Nummer 1: Adolf Hitler. Dieser hatte sich am 30. April gemeinsam mit seiner kurz zuvor angetrauten Ehefrau das Leben genommen. Unmittelbar nach dem Tod hatten die letzten Getreuen die Leichen ins Freie getragen und verbrannt. Dass es überhaupt eine Frau an Hitlers Seite gab, ist nicht nur für die Sieger eine Überraschung.

Nach Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs erschütterten Aufstände, Generalstreiks und Straßenkämpfe das geschlagene Deutschland. In Oberschlesien griffen polnische Aufständische nach dem deutschen Industriegebiet, im Ruhrgebiet zwangen französische und belgische Truppen mit äußerster Brutalität die streikenden Bergarbeiter zum Frondienst. Ein ganzes Land wurde zum Spielball ausländischer Kräfte.
