What a time it was. Suddenly, all across Nottingham, the UK's ninth biggest city, transmitters were crackling into life with another kind of voice, another kind of sound. In a way, we were back to the '60s. And in a way, we weren't. It all happened in the city of Robin Hood; but it could have been anywhere in the UK, where similar stories were being played out by like-minded individuals who were starting to realize that something was very, very wrong.... Make no mistake. This is the story of a revolution.

Clergymen rarely make good politicians. There is perhaps no better example of this than Father Charles Coughlin, a Depression-era priest-turned-demagogue who was seen as an angel by some and a devil by others. The same man who cruelly castigated the Jews also spoke eloquently on the needs and rights of the most downtrodden in society. The same orator who said, "Roosevelt or ruin", later cried, "Roosevelt and ruin." In the 1930s, his effective use of the radio revolutionized mass communications, and millions of people listened to his every word.

The series weaves together more than 50 first-person interviews with an unprecedented collection of archival sound: a rare recording of the 1964 trial that resulted in Mandela's life sentence; a visit between Mandela and his family secretly taped by a prison guard; marching songs of guerilla soldiers; government propaganda films; and pirate radio broadcasts from the African National Congress (ANC).
