Saint Augustine, born in Constantine in 354 C.E., was raised by a devout Christian mother. He abandoned the Christianity of his upbringing and had an illegitimate son. After hearing the sermons of Ambrose, he began his great internal struggle which led to his conversion in 387 C.E. The Confessions describe his conversion, shedding light on the questions that had troubled him on his way to the Cross. St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 - 1787) was an Italian bishop famous for his moral teaching. Initially, he practised law but was drawn to the religious life and became a priest in the Catholic church. He ministered as a missionary to the poor setting up "Evening Chapels". He would later settle his own congregation, and then was eventually appointed bishop. He wrote many famous sermons, meditations, and ascetical works. His meditations are still used today for the stations of the cross during Lent.

The Cross and the Beatitudes is one of Archbishop Sheen's earlier works, first published in 1937. This special book draws a parallel between the first seven Beatitudes and Christ's final Seven Words. The final Seven Words are the few sentences and phrases that Jesus Christ spoke while on the Cross. However in both works she would have been aware of the public nature of the works, both to censors and opponents. With her letters the full character of St. Teresa comes out, providing a window into her personal communications. Her advise and counsel was invaluable to the recipients of the letters.
