Narrated by Grace, an independent and feisty young girl, the novella focuses on the tension created by her confusion over the contradictions in the world around her. As the plot unfolds, a series of shocking revelations leave Grace bewildered by the behavior of those she loves, and in the end, she, and the reader, are left with unresolved questions about forgiveness and redemption, but certain that war brings only great human suffering.

A young boy who has been bullied all his life becomes lost as a result of a cruel practical joke. Stranded in the rugged wilderness of New York's Adirondack Mountains, he rescues an old Indian who convinces him to join him on a journey to a place the old man calls Medicine Tree. As they travel, the boy learns and grows, and many obstacles are overcome. Eventually the boy learns that the Lord has a plan for his life, and he not only survives his ordeal, he emerges as a hero as well.

In this story comes a question we have all pondered: what would you do if you only had a short amount of time left to live? Sulk and let it happen, or try to make something special of your last days? Ayden is forced with this choice while snow falls outside, carolers sing, friends exchange gifts, and the entirety of the Christmas season happens around him. While the Christmas season can be enchanting, for some it can be extremely difficult as they struggle with loss, loneliness, and even homelessness
