La maledizione del fico raccontata nei Vangeli di Marco e di Matteo è, insieme all'uccisione dei porci, uno dei rari miracoli che si risolvono con effetti negativi. Ma se la morte dei porci precipitati da un crepaccio libera un indemoniato, la maledizione del fico non porta alcun vantaggio. Gesù è a Betania, si sveglia affamato e si mette a cercare i frutti tra le foglie di un fico rigoglioso. Non trovandone, lo condanna alla sterilità eterna. Al di là dell'apparente insensatezza, che significato teologico dobbiamo dare a questa maledizione? Che mistero nasconde?
