Cet ordre fut créé en 1129, et œuvra à l'accompagnement et à la protection des pèlerins pour Jérusalem dans le contexte de la guerre sainte et des croisades. Il participa activement aux batailles. Il constitua à travers l'Europe un réseau de monastères appelés commanderies.
