Sailing Travel

This audiobook is the story of sailing across the ocean from Guam to San Francisco on our wonderful sailboat, the "Spirit of the Wind", a 41 foot Taiwan-built Ketch designed by William Garden. A group of 20-something kids went to Guam looking for the meaning of life, bought a boat, fixed it up, and learned to sail across the ocean. It was a beautiful and spiritual journey, while at times was totally and completely terrifying. It introduced me to the South Pacific Islands and the wonderful and gracious people there - it was truly a paradise.

This short piece outlines the adventures I had both in the air and on the sea. My travels took me on a flying safari across Australia and cruising around the coasts of Tasmania and New Zealand's South Island. Both spectacular, breathtaking places in their own rights. Let me tell you, the rewards outstripped the risks by a long way.

The fog is just beginning to disperse after sunrise but this is not a problem for navigation because you are just going to follow the western shore. You are the first person in when the gate opens at the West Bay Park and your hand launched vessel slides effortlessly into the water. You are off. You pass a tiny Island 50 yards from the launch. Islands no matter how small always excite my mind. The island is perhaps 20' wide and has one small stick like tree growing on it.

Kayaking at night has its rewards and hazards. I have noticed that when you master a sport, you eventually want to challenge yourself. Sooner or later you end up doing it at night. Low visibility takes a sport and turns it into an extremely isolating, yet empowering, experience. My life and joy for living are in only my hands. I must make peace with God, silence my personal fears, then embrace life to its fullest. This is the pleasure I have found in kayaking at night.

We survive a major supercell storm bearing us down on a dangerous reef south of Apapulco. We get good advice from a wild seabird.

In the still and cool hours before sunrise I have learned a few things about myself and God. It is my hope to share them with you, as I share the experiences which take place in my orange 15' kayak. Take what you like and forget the rest.
