Robert A. Heinlein wrote The Number of the Beast, which was published in 1980. In the book Zeb, Deety, Hilda, and Jake are ambushed by the alien "Black Hats" and barely escape with their lives on a specially configured vehicle (the Gay Deceiver) which can travel along various planes of existence, allowing them to visit parallel universes. However, unknown to most fans, Heinlein had already written a "parallel" novel about the four characters and parallel universes in 1977.

The fracturing of the V'kit'no'sat Empire has now come to fruition, but the full-fledged civil war has not resulted. With the depth of experience and knowledge the dinosaur races have accumulated over the millennia, they know the destructive cost that such devastation would bring, and a conservative warfare methodology breaks out wherein the fighting is over territory while trying to spare lives and as much equipment as possible, so not to weaken the overall empire.

Gaining greater responsibilities, Mak'to'ran continues his push to reforge the V'kit'no'sat empire while uncovering yet another mystery of the past.

Mak'to'ran travels to the Hjar'at with information regarding the altered Hadarak and the alliance of extremely advanced races that Star Force has amassed...only to find even more treachery amongst the very militant Stegosauruses.

Earth's naivety has come to an end. While Star Force begins to defend itself against the V'kit'no'sat, the Skarron Crusade is still in full force, eventually arriving at the border of the advanced Voku Empire and slamming into it with alarming numbers...too many for the superior Voku to stop, turning the secondary war into a contest of attrition while the bulk of the Crusade is directed at the Li'vorkrachnika and others. The full might of the Skarron Empire is now visible to the galaxy as everyone who stands in the way of the 4th Crusade is subsequently overrun by a wealth of military assets beyond reckoning.
