He wields his sword high above his head and everyone praises his name. He is a warrior! His joy is his weapon, and he brings joy to all people far and near. People look to him to feel better, to be able to smile, and to lift their own heads high.

This book is a meditation on the enduring power — and the quiet danger — of the nation. Drawing from personal memory, philosophical critique, and cultural analysis, it explores how nationalism, though a modern invention, has rooted itself deeply in identity, language, death, and belonging. It questions the myths of origin, the imagined unity of the “we,” and the emotional architecture that transforms patriotism into violence. While honoring the richness of cultural difference, it challenges the need for borders, purity, and exclusion as the basis of political life.

Wanting to be included is a universal longing. We have struggled to find our place in life. We have watched our kids struggle to find theirs. Although this book addresses gender identity, it is for anyone who has felt excluded in life. Our hope is to provide community and safe spaces for expressing daily struggles in life.
