Social Labor

In early 1968 the grisly on-the-job deaths of two African-American sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee, prompted an extended strike by that city's segregated force of trash collectors. Workers sought union protection, higher wages, improved safety, and the integration of their work force. Their work stoppage became a part of the larger civil rights movement and drew an impressive array of national movement leaders to Memphis, including, on more than one occasion, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King added his voice to the struggle in what became the final speech of his life.

Accenture wins a lot of awards and portrays itself as the perfect company, but perhaps Accenture seems too good to be true. After all, the company promised "market relevant" and "performance based" to its Austin call center agents, but it did not follow through.

The idea for this book first arose out of a graduate seminar I was in as a master's student at Georgetown University. In this essay, I describe the reasons I believe that South Korea has such a low birth rate, and why the country is set up in a way that often actively disincentivizes women to participate in the workforce.
