Il contient le récit des derniers discours de Moïse aux Israélites et le récit de sa mort, avant qu'ils n'entrent au pays de Canaan, sur l'autre rive du Jourdain. Il forme un second code de lois, après celui de l'Exode, d'où son titre de Deutéronome (seconde loi). Il retrace d'autre part différents événements vécus par les Israélites depuis leur sortie d'Égypte et déjà relatés dans les trois livres précédents du Pentateuque, (Exode, Lévitique et Nombres).

"Le Lévitique" est le troisième des cinq livres de la Torah (Pentateuque). Il doit son nom au terme "lévite", prêtre hébreu issu de la tribu de Lévi. Il parle des devoirs sacerdotaux en Israël. Il met l'accent sur la sainteté de Dieu et le code selon lequel son peuple pouvait vivre pour devenir saint. Son but est d'enseigner les préceptes moraux et les rituels religieux de la loi de Moïse.
