Il suit "Le 1er livre des Rois", avec lequel il constituait, à l'origine un seul livre. Depuis le règne d'Ochozias, roi d'Israël, jusqu'à la chute du royaume de Juda, il présente avec plus ou moins de détails chacun des rois d'Israël et de Juda, deux royaumes condamnés par la justice divine après leur rejet des commandements divins.
