"Le livre de Josué" est le premier livre historique de l'Ancien Testament chrétien et le premier livre des Prophètes dans la Bible hébraïque. Il fait suite au Pentateuque, qui se termine par la mort de Moïse aux portes du pays de Canaan. Le livre relate la conquête du pays promis sous la direction de Josué, et il porte son nom parce qu'il en est le personnage principal, et non l'auteur. Selon la tradition juive, il fut écrit par Jérémie, lequel puisa dans des documents anciens qui dateraient du Xe siècle av. J.-C.

Poème didactique écrit en prose, on considère généralement qu'il porte sur le problème du Mal. Dans ce récit dramatique, Satan accuse Job devant Dieu et prétend que Job ne servirait plus l'Éternel s'il se trouvait dans l'affliction. Dieu va donc prouver à Satan que son serviteur Job lui demeure fidèle, même dans la souffrance. Dieu permettra au diable de le frapper.
