Bobby Fischer won the world chess championship in 1972 and the chess boom started. The Village Chess Shop opened on Thompson Street, Washington Square Park chess tables turned into a regular venue, Times Square 42nd Street opened chess tables not only at Bryant Park but also on Broadway and several indoors clubs.
