True Crime Serial Murders

Serial killers have haunted the public imagination for hundreds of years. They have struck fear and terror into the collective consciousness for their gruesome and malicious crimes against humanity. What motivates them to commit these murders? How do people, who appear normal on the surface, manage to live secret lives of hedonism, psychosis, and bloodlust?

As a child in Montana, Jamie Gehring and her family shared their land, their home, and their dinner table with a hermit with a penchant for murder. But they had no idea the odd recluse living in the adjacent cabin was anything more than a disheveled man who brought young Jamie painted rocks as gifts. Ted was simply Ted, and erratic behavior, surprise visits, and chilling events were dismissed because he was “just the odd hermit”. In fact, he was much more—Ted eluded the FBI for 17 years while mailing explosives to strangers, earning the infamous title of Unabomber.

During the early 1960s, just as Beatlemania was exploding throughout the United Kingdom, a pair of psychopathic British killers began preying on the very young, innocent, and helpless of Greater Manchester. Between 1963 and 1965, Ian Brady and his lover and partner, Myra Hindley, were responsible for the abduction, rape, torture, and murder of five young victims, ranging in age from ten to seventeen years old. The English press dubbed the grisly series of homicides "the Moors Murders," named for the desolate landscape where three of the corpses were eventually discovered.

In 1990 in Washington state, the bodies of Yolanda Sapp, Nickie Lowe, and Kathy Brisbois were found on the banks of the Spokane River. They were part of a close-knit alliance of sex workers whose oath to protect each other was, in the end, hopeless. For twenty-two years their brutal murders went unsolved. In 2012, a DNA cold hit pointed to Douglas Perry. A repeat assault offender, Douglas was currently incarcerated in Carswell, Texas. But there was a twist: The facility was for female prisoners. The man authorities hunted for decades was now Donna Perry.

True crime is about humanity. We are hardwired to pay attention to things that could harm us, and that’s why so many of us are captivated by the genre. It’s not a reflection of something dark within us - it’s a reflection of human nature. True crime has become more than a source of entertainment, and it plays a critical role in giving forgotten victims a voice they never had the chance to share. Indeed, reading and sharing true crime stories is an act of social responsibility.

From April 1984 to August 1985, Ramirez murdered at least fifteen people during various break-ins, with his crimes usually taking place after dark, leading to him being dubbed the Night Stalker, the Walk-In Killer, and the Valley Intruder.

For Brazil, Tiago Henrique Gomes da Rocha is the monster in the deceptive mask, the handsome man with the suave persona that fooled so many. He is a good-looking young man, 6’4” with brown hair and brown eyes, who is considered a decent person by those who know him. Although he was a quiet child, and he kept to himself even in adulthood, he had all the physical qualities that women find attractive. Unfortunately, this fact undoubtedly helped him become the most murderous serial killer the city of Goiânia, in Brazil, had ever known.

If you were to think of a killer, what’s the first thing that would come to mind? Is it a hulking figure with bulging biceps and a deep, gravelly voice? Well, what about a kind, sweet old lady?
