Righting wrongs as a teenager in the 70s. Most of my childhood is a blur, but there are many incidents between the ages of 12 and 16 that are vividly etched into my mind. For those four years or so I committed numerous acts of vandalism and other crimes. Not only was I never caught, I wasn't even considered a suspect. It all started on one specific day when I was 12 years old.

In 1878, Elder Joseph Standing traveled into the Appalachian mountains of North Georgia, seeking converts for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In February 1971, racial tension surrounding school desegregation in Wilmington, North Carolina, culminated in four days of violence and skirmishes between white vigilantes and black residents. The turmoil resulted in two deaths, six injuries, more than $500,000 in damage, and the firebombing of a white-owned store before the National Guard restored uneasy peace. Despite glaring irregularities in the subsequent trial, 10 young persons were convicted of arson and conspiracy and then sentenced to a total of 282 years in prison.

Between 1910 and 1920, vigilantes and law enforcement-including the renowned Texas Rangers - killed Mexican residents with impunity.
