荷物船・海牛丸の機関長である主人公は、九州大学の留学生・李発を船内に招いた。機関長は、ちょうど上海を出る間際に知り合いの王から李発のことを頼まれていた。
機関長は機関室に李発を案内して部屋の説明を始めた。この部屋で李発は宿泊する予定だった。李発に鍵を渡して、きちんと掛けておくように説明。
また、機関長は、泥棒みたいなやつが部屋を出るたびに戸締りをしておいた方がいいことを伝えた。その後、機関長は李発に王とどうやって知り合ったのか。
また、密輸入している麻雀の話、さらには船内のボイラーの話、機関長になるまでの話などさまざまなことを李発に伝えた。そして、機関長と李発の壮絶な舌戦がはじまった。

1889年（明治22年）1月4日 - 1936年（昭和11年）3月11日。
他の筆名に海若藍平、香倶土三鳥など。現在では、夢久、夢Qなどと呼ばれることもある。福岡県福岡市出身。日本探偵小説三大奇書の一つに数えられる畢生の奇書『ドグラ・マグラ』をはじめ、怪奇色と幻想性の色濃い作風で名高い。またホラー的な作品もある。
