Story
The house was stripped bare of all its treasures. Gone was the furniture, the family silver, the paintings and the antique china. And if that was a shock for Charles Todd, painter of horses, how much more harrowing was the trauma for his cousin Donald, whose house it was and whose young wife lay on the sitting room floor, bloody and dead... A coincidental meeting with a middle-aged widow sends Charles off to Australia, on the trail of a gang with a fruitful business in forging works of art.

Story
Peter Darwin was hoping for some quiet leave from the Foreign Office. Instead he found himself in the village of his childhood, at the service of a veterinary surgeon whose operating theater was rapidly acquiring an unwanted reputation as an abattoir. The sudden unexplained death of a string of valuable racehorses from one small area in Gloucestershire was a mystery the police couldn't solve. But Darwin was local. He remembered people and what was at stake. And now he knew enough to get himself killed.

Story
To a jockey, losing his license is the equivalent of being struck off, or disbarred, or cashiered. When steeplechase rider Kelly Hughes lost his license his first feelings were of bewilderment and disbelief, for he was not guilty of the charges. Nor, to the best of his knowledge, was the trainer he had ridden for, who lost his livelihood as well. When his first stunned state of shock subsided, Kelly began to wonder why he had been framed, who had done it, and how it had been achieved.

Story
Amazing what bodily injury could do for a man. A fall from a racehorse had left brilliant jockey Sid Halley dangerously depressed, with a wrecked hand and the need for a new career. And now a bullet wound was helping him find one. He'd been with a detective agency since his racing accident, but it wasn't until some two-bit hoodlum drilled a slug into his side that he was sent out on a case of his own. That was where he met Zanna Martin, a woman who just might make life worth living again.

Story
When a sick friend asks Edward Lincoln to investigate the comprehensive failure of a string of racehorses, he agrees to help out. But it is impossible for him to go about the task quietly and unnoticed because he is now a world-class star of action films, in which he always plays the hero. And the apparently easy survey of the string of racehorses blows him through a smokescreen into circumstances, where, to survive, he has to make himself become the man everyone else already thinks he is.

Father - Son Bonding Moments!
I enjoy Dick Francis' novels and Simon Prebble's narrations. They are easy listening. The Audible description of this story is good. It has mystery, suspense and a little bit of action. Nearly 18 years old, Ben has his heart set on becoming a steeplechase jockey but his father manipulated Ben into joining his parliament campaign as his driver. Ben soon had to become his father's body guard when mysteries, murderous things starts to happen which are aimed at getting the father to quit the race for parliament. Ben's instincts about the protection of his father leads to finding out that his father's car had been tampered with. The plot within the story is believable. Simon Prebble is an excellent narrator.

Exciting and Unusual Dick Francis
Over the years I have always enjoyed the horse racing mysteries of Dick Francis, but this was an unexpected view of the author's broad knowledge of British politics and human relations. It was completely absorbing and provided me with a better understanding of the British electoral process-- not generally associated with attempted murder!

A warm voice reading a cozy thriller
I'm a Dick Francis fan, reading many times all of his books. I would give this book an A-minus in terms of the canon of his work. It's a real father-son/coming-of-age story, with a political (mild!) thriller and, of course, a horse or two thrown in. I found in Prebble's voice, (which I sometimes find too plummy) a wonderfully warm narrator, friendly to the characters. A likable plot, and a likable narrator! AUDIBLE 20 REVIEW SWEEPSTAKES ENTRY

Great listen!
One of my favorite Dick Francis reads - I really enjoyed listening to it this time around. The narration was pretty good, neither overly read or expressionless.

OK Not Francis best
The plot of 10 lb. Penalty is quite different and less satisfying than other Francis novels. In this one the plot is strung out, becomes flabby after the main conflict seems solved. It finally ends in a second, unsurprising, climax and resolution to the original problem. But I was ready to be done with it much earlier. Narrator Simon Prebble is excellent, as always.
