From a parent of a 13 year old, ADHD boy

Russell Barkley is amazing. I can't believe how much this man has given of his life, to researching ADHD...and to our great benefit! Listen to him if you are struggling as a parent, teacher or friend of someone who suffers with ADHD. For me, I have greatly struggled with my, now 13 year old, son's ADHD behavior. I am just scratching the surface of education and understanding him. Therefore i feel i am much more capable of supporting him and advocating for him at school and in other, social situations. If nothing else, give principle #2 a listen.

A must read for parents of children with ADHD

This was the most helpful, easy to listen to books I have read on the subject of ADHD. It not only explains the disorder but gives you encouragement, support and instructions on how to handle the struggles of parenting a child with ADHD.

A Big Dose of Reality, Warmth, and Encouragement

I am a child clinical psychologist with extensive clinical and research experience related to ADHD. I am also a foster parent, and I thought I might enjoy and find new inspiration in Dr. Barkley's words. Russell Barkley's books are popular but definitely not "pop" psychology; he is a respected scientist practitioner. This book exceeded even my high expectations. Isn't it funny how you can "know" something but still need to hear it again -- in a new way. I found this book to be accurate and grounded while also being warm, encouraging, realistic, and practical. Even the narration well represents Dr. Barkley's authoritative, trustworthy voice.

Narration was too hard to listen to.

My child’s therapist recommended this book, but I rarely have time to sit and read, so I purchased the audio book. I which I had listened to the sample before buying. I only got through about an hour before I had to turn it off. I guess I’ll need to buy the printed book if I’m going to read it.

decent book

I like the author quite a bit. the book has some outdated statements but has overall good information. I did not like the reading. I found his voice irritating and the way he presented the chapters wasn't working for me.

Love this book but disliked the narrator

This book is so useful and helpful for parents of kids w ADHD. But the narrator was so intense! He sounds like a baseball announcer. His inflection and tone were so distracting. And it made it difficult to really connect w the material. For this book I would choose print.

Useful book

The book itself is very useful, but the narrator is horrible. I can honestly say I will not be listening to any book narrated this guy. I do, however, highly recommend the book… in print. Right off the bat I found myself having a better understanding of what my daughter is going through. I’ve been able to adjust my approach and offer more patience with her.

Awful narration, great content.

I am a therapist who has followed Dr. Barkley’s work for years and found it helpful in my practice. This is no exception. It is a helpful guide that I will recommend to clients. I would resonate with others who said the narration was disruptive. The cadence and style of the narrator was oddly jarring, and it took some time to block out the irritation I felt. Perhaps consider reading this, not listening to it.

This book is great!!!

I found this as an amazing resource for parents trying to figure out what to do with their child. Along with Dr. Russell’s “Taking Charge of ADHD book,” this is a great outline.

Especially good for young children

The book is good, especially if your son or daughter still young. In my opinion not really useful for teenagers.
