Publisher's Summary

Paul McGowan tells all (and then some) in this riotous tale of misbegotten success that’s 99 percent true in all the best ways. From his not-so-innocent youth growing up in the shadow of Disneyland and summer evenings in the innocent 1950s, to his dope-smoking, snake-eating, draft-dodging, loony-bin misadventure through Europe, to his struggles to build a thriving enterprise from a stack of dusty albums - see how the CEO of a worldwide company took 50 years to become an overnight success.

Unlike Paul, you may never get picked up by the secret service or carry the shame of bankruptcy, but you just might see yourself in his repeated failures or in his refusal to let life keep him down. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry as Paul describes the struggle of finding his place in a community you never knew existed. Through it all, you’ll discover what Paul did: life’s detours offer the best opportunities to find your way.

Well done!

Paul is an excellent narrator! It was most enjoyable, laugh out loud, shake your head in disbelief and disgust in some of the food he ate and situations he found himself in. Quite entertaining! My favourite part is the long journey he took to hear an amazing sounding system that had nothing wrong with it just so the person could show Paul how happy and amazing his speakers were but sadly....it was in a very poor part of the world. Starts off a little slow but I still highly recommend!

Funny story with heart - read by Paul himself

I really enjoyed this, not just from an audiophile perspective, but from a story point of view as well.

Paul's got a very relaxing and easy to listen to voice, and his stories are quite surprising at times!

Amazing, awe inspiring and motivational

It was extremely enjoyable listening to this audiobook of Paul’s life. From his wild young days as a boy getting into all kinds of trouble with his friends, to his more mature, more responsible adult days with his business ventures, Terry and the boys. It was as if I was watching a young wide eyed boy grow into a man who would eventually, and against all odds, see his dreams come true. After this book, I’m motivated to push harder to achieve the high goals I’ve set for myself, I feel encouraged to love family and friends deeper and enjoy every moment of life. After all, like Arnie, none of us know how long we have on this Earth.

Not at all what I was expecting!!! And that’s a good thing.

I got this Book because I love music, it’s my Drug of choice. Always has been. I expected this book to basically be Paul grows up, has some adventures, starts PS Audio struggles, leaves and starts Genesis, things happen..., Paul leave and goes back to his “Baby”.... and bla, bla, bla...

I couldn’t have been more WRONG!

This book was captivating, entertaining & fun. I had trouble putting it down. Ok, well I drove around the block 10 times until the end of the chapter I was listening to.

If your on the fence just buy this book and turn it up to 11.

We need more Paul McGowans!

As long time subscriber to the PS Audio YouTube channel I was excited to know of Paul's and PS Audios history. Paul's book does not disappoint in the least! I look forward to the day I can make a trip to Boulder and listen to and tour all of what PS Audio has to offer.

An entertaining and interesting biography

I enjoyed every minute.
Like PS Audio's hi-fi equipment, the biography is presented with emotion and passion.

An Unexpected Joy

My own budding curiosity with the audiophile life brought me to this book. Paul’s YouTube channel is a weekly visit for me and I decided to check out the book. This was nothing like I had expected. The journey through Paul’s life connected me with ideas and questions that I’ve always wondered about in relation to my own fathers life, being born in the same year, but never had the opportunity to speak of. This is a fascinating, often funny, and genuinely entertaining book for anyone with even a hint of curiosity for audio. Even without that audio aspect, the tales and stories are endearing, heartfelt, and ultimately a slice of Americana that kept me thinking about this book almost every moment I was away from it until I reached the end. Bravo.

Entertaining, relevant, reflective

Having followed Paul McGowan through his leadership at PS Audio via his podcasts and Youtube videos, I anticipated his story would be filled with personal success stories and business perspectives. This book went way beyond that. I found so much could be learned from his life lessons and descriptions of a lifetime of obstacles he has dealt with. HIs perspective on the 60s, Vietnam, and the US military gave me insight to things I did not understand growing up a decade behind Paul. His stories of his business challenges are also valuable for those in small businesses. Following your passion and making pivots along the way to find the right balance ultimately pays off through the journey and its destination. Great audio read by Paul made my drive to and from work in Silicon Valley something to look forward to in the two weeks I was able to enjoy this book.

Like reliving the early days of audio

Great story of a life well lived.
Always good to hear an author read his own work
