Publisher's Summary

In this gripping second novella in the Widow’s Island series, bestselling author Melinda Leigh delivers a chilling tale of murder in the Pacific Northwest.

Deputy Tessa Black gave up her career as a detective with the Seattle PD and returned to the Pacific Northwest island she calls home to care for her ailing mother. Tessa thinks her mother’s illness is the worst thing she’ll face - until she responds to a routine call in the state park and discovers a local man harpooned to a sign.

As the murder investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that the victim harbored secrets. Together with her FBI agent best friend, Cate, and park ranger Logan Wilde, Tessa must connect the pieces before the murderer strikes again. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more she finds herself - and the ones she loves - in harm’s way.

Pressure mounts as Tessa attempts to juggle the current case with her search for the truth behind her childhood friend Samantha’s disappearance twenty years ago. Can Tessa find the murderer and uncover answers about Samantha without jeopardizing everything she holds dear?

OK book, horrible narration..

I said I wasn't going to listen to this because the narrator was soooooo awful but since it was a
free read, free listen I decided to give her another chance to see if she got better. She didn’t. So, I quit listening and just read the novella.

This was a story about the murder of an artist who had been harpooned AND Tessa’s problem trying to take care of her mother who has dementia and who finally wandered off into the woods.

Since it was only 101 pages I can't say much without giving it away so, enough said.

There was a thought or two of romance but that was all and the F-bomb was thrown out there 5 times.

As to the narration: Horrible! Jeez, everything Christine Williams read was so romantic sounding. If she was talking about a dead body she made it sound romantic. That was the only emotion she had. AND every time the book said it was Logan talking I thought WTH, I thought that was Tessa or Cait. Every man sounded just like a girl. I quit listening after about 15 minutes, just about the time Logan spoke for the first time. NOTHING worse than a girly-sounding man. The other few reviews must be friends or relatives of the author or the narrator, to have given her 4 and 5 star reviews.

Meh

Leaves much too much under done. The plot races to a conclusion on rather weak development.

Narrator needs acting lessons. She has virtually no inflection or variation.....
Simple seems to be reading a text.

Awful!

Awful! When I first starting reading (audible version) I thought the book should have been longer than 2 hours. By the time I finished I wished it was less than 2 hours.

I have enjoyed all of Melinda Leigh's books, the She Can Series, Morgan Dane, Scarlet Falls, Midnight Exposure and the books she wrote with Kendra Elliot. I did not enjoy this book and I if I recall I didn't enjoy the 1st book either. The characters are not interesting. I felt that the book was more about the characters mother who unfortunately has a mental disorder that effects her memory. Towards the end of the book when the Mom got lost, the entire book became dedicated to searching and finding her instead of searching and finding a murderer.

Nope, didn't like it and don't think I'll read any other books in this series.

The narration of this book is very good. The characters, suspense, setting, and story were entertaining.

Way short

I feel that it’s not right to split these stories all up. I’m hooked and not at all liking that it is costing so much.

Entertaining read

This was a great little mystery/case in a short story but not too short with some twists that keep your attention and wondering who did it. It is definitely building the world as each one goes as well but it can be read as a standalone. Looking forward to the next one.

Enjoyed the story, not the narration

Audiobook: Narrator - Christine Williams

I was hoping the publisher would have used a different narrator for this book as it is written in a different heroine’s point of view. This is Tessa and she sounds exactly like Cate. All the other characters sound like her as well. I still struggled with the cadence the narrator used with so many of the voices. I’m a lenient reader and listener and can usually get past anything that bothers me but I’m really struggling with this narrator.

Tessa’s issue with caring for her mother added a level of angst I didn’t expect. The mystery had its own bit of angst but nothing compared to Tessa and her mother. My heart almost shattered from her struggle as I’ve been there myself.

This was another story that I did not see the ending or the person responsible. I love the surprise ending and enjoyed the story as a whole despite its close feel to the first book. These two authors have written these so cohesively it feels as though they are written by the same author. Perhaps the fact that they are each a novella adds to that feeling. Nevertheless, I liked this story and can’t wait to see more in the series.
