Publisher's Summary

Veronica Speedwell returns in another adventure filled with secrets and betrayal from Deanna Raybourn, the New York Times best-selling author of the Lady Julia Grey Mysteries.

Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée - much to Stoker's chagrin. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.

As spectral figures, ghostly music, and mysterious threats begin to plague the partygoers, Veronica enlists Stoker's help to discover the host's true motivations. And as they investigate, it becomes clear that there are numerous mysteries surrounding the Romilly estate, and every person present has a motive to kill Rosamund....

This series is better with each new book

I’ve been having fun with the Veronica Speedwell series, but I have to say these last two books (3 & 4) have been my favorite to date. I do love the mysteries, and the modern clever woman Veronica presents, but I love the last two because we are finally getting somewhere with the romance between Stoker and Veronica!

In A Treacherous Curse (the previous book) Stroker’s tumultuous past is revealed and mostly settled. Veronica is still skittish about getting involved with Stoker, worried that he still carried feelings for his ex-wife, and sort of sabotage’s herself in the process. Fear not, Stoker seems to know Veronica better than she knows herself. Their relationship is the highlight for me! These two are close and united even when they’re in a bit of a snit with each other. There’s a begrudging possessiveness, they don’t want to feel jealous but can’t help it, even when there’s no serious competition. I love the obvious passion and intensity between them, their cheeky banter is a wicked delight! Cementing their connection is their shared zeal for science. I was over the moon with how things turned out by the end!

There is a tragic romance within the current mystery (no, not Veronica and Stoker) and I have to say that while my heart broke for the injured male, I felt worse for the woman that bore the effects of his heartbreak more! It was a tragedy all around.

I can’t wait for the next book, as a Jack the Ripper type seems to be the villain, and I’m eager to see how Veronica and Stoker will take on this evil as they settle into a new understanding.

I alternatively read and listened to this book, and I can’t recommend the audio narration more! Angele Masters’ performance was perfection!

not the best, figured out who done it too soon

I'd hoped I would have liked it but I just didn't. The plot was thin and I really did not like Veronica at all in this book, which really saddened me. She's always been headstrong and independent and I loved that about her but in this one, something was just off. I also figured out the plot and "who dunnit" right away. There were no twists and turns no second guessing at all. I was disappointed with the reading as well. I can usually distinguish who is talking but the men's voices sounded too much alike.

Worst pick for a reade I have yet to hear

The performance is completed off for this series. I preordered this book and was looking forward to another fine listen. My disappointment was immediate. The performance in no way fit the characters Ms Raybourn has developed in her earlier installments.

Yet another gripping mystery

Yet another wonderful mystery! Veronica and Stoker are always a treat! I can’t wait to see where their next adventures lead them. You know a series is amazing when you reread each one in anticipation of the release date. I will be waiting with baited breath until the next novel. Excelsior!

Simply Terrific

This is a wonderful series if you appreciate great story-telling, memorable characters, a cunning wordsmith, and interesting mysteries. Yes, these books have it all. The narrator is excellent, as well. I've enjoyed each one of the books in this series and look forward to more.

good fun

The narrator is excellent, changing just enough for the differing characters and maintaining consistency in mood and pacing.
I like this series, good atmosphere ,good historical feel and interesting characters.
Just a little gothic along with the sciences. The mysteries , even if you guess ' who done it' are compelling enough to make the solutions worth the read. One of my favourite listens!

Love the characters. Amazing narration.

I really enjoy this series. The main characters are absolutely amazing foils for each other. This entry features Tiberius, Stoker's older brother, much more prominently. He is amusing and is becoming one of my favorite characters.
The trio take off to a castle on a Cornish island and are asked to help solve the mystery of a woman who vanished three years earlier. There is quite a cast of characters, any of whom who had opportunity to help someone disappear.
But it is the by play between the three main characters that elevates the story to another level. The badinage had me laughing throughout, as the rapier barbs even led to fisticuffs. Veronica, the intrepid lepidopterist, has her hands full dealing with the brothers.
Angela Masters' narration is fantastic.

Another superb entry in the series!

I love this series! Veronica is a strong and independent character, who makes her own way in a mans world. She goes toe-to-toe with Stoker and other men without losing her sense of being a modern woman. I love how things are finally really heating up between her and Stoker, but without either of them having to compromise! The way relationships should be!

As always a riveting mystery and thriller with all the elements I've come to love in this series. Even Jack the Ripper makes a cameo for historical context and of course science abounds.

I blew through this book and am now eagerly awaiting the next one...it can't come soon enough!!!!! Excelsior, as Veronica so aptly says!
