Publisher's Summary

Not all guys obsess over tiny details…but Army Special Forces do.

The wall just didn’t look right. Alex has been trying to cope. Life after his deployment had been rough. His ex-wife thought he needed to stop disappointing their daughter. She was right.

He would try harder.

With six hours before his little girl’s fourth birthday party, he saw the anomaly. One wall was too short. Plenty of time to tear out a panel and look behind it. He found a brick wall. His house wasn’t made of brick.

Behind that was another just like the first. He still had time. When the second wall came down, Alex stood and stared at the shining doorway. Next to it, held up by a knife, was a note. It was a warning - and he didn’t listen.

You’ll love being transported through time, to a future unlike anything we’ve imagined, where Alex’s fight to get back home becomes an epic struggle. This first book in the series will blow you away.

surprised

I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book..it was a simple story....but it had a very real story considering the concept. the story starts right away as I prefer... instead of long developing overview leading before story actually starts. I'm going to go on to book 2.

Interesting character and premise

I found it a strangely interesting combo between A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and A Man Called Horse. With Planet of the Apes and anti-technology horror vibes thrown in for good measure. A mild-mannered special forces dad is dropped into this mix. Who plays Alex in the movie?

Unusual choice

This type of story is not typical for me. None the less it was very entertaining and engaging. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Acceptable Unsophisticated Action-adventure

Shawn Inmon borrows pretty heavily from stories like 'The Planet Of The Apes', 'The Chronicles Of Narnia', Rice-Burroughs's John Carter stories, and H.G. Wells's "The Time Machine' to feed his tale about a former US Army soldier who discovers a walled-off portal in his Oregon basement and steps into a different world. There, he encounters a fellow time-traveller who introduces him to life as a member of an 'Avatar'-like tribe of 7-foot-tall tech-hating quasi-Aborigines.
Inmon does a "decent" job worldbuilding and injecting action into the story.. but didn't blow me away by any means (I'm a fan of the 'Middle Falls Time Travel' series, but this author doesn't have many writing awards in his future).

Narrator Johnathan McClain elevates the book somewhat with an imperfect but impressive reading performance, too. He occasionally exhibits an odd tendency to almost whisper soto voce segments of the text (actually forcing me to strain to hear).. but otherwise displays an emotive tone that complements spot-on diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting. Podium Audio cast this project nicely.

Altogether, 'A Door Into Time: An Alex Hawk Time Travel Adventure Book One' merits 5.5 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' option, it was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of quiet afternoons.. but spend your Credit elsewhere should they ask for one.

Mysterious New(?) World!

I’m a huge sci-fi fan and have read a number of books with similar time travel themes so it was nice to come across one with a different perspective. It has lots of interesting ideas, creatures and an intriguing plot that carry the reader/listener thru this initial journey into the series. I thrashed around a bit at first, like a fish on a line, but now I’m hooked and reeling in for more!

Not usually my style of book, but I loved it

Not usually my style of book, but I pushed through and really enjoyed it. Shawn really knows how to bring characters to life.

I will finally be able to spend some credits on this author after all the "included" Middle Falls books and this "included" Alex Hawk book. I'll definitely be buying the next book in this series.

Small issue with audio being too quiet at times, especially listening while in the car when the narrator almost whispers.

Good story line that is evolving into a great series. I will be reading the rest of this series to follow the adventures and lives of the various characters.
