Story
In Beauty Will Save the World, Brian Zahnd presents the argument that this loss of beauty as a principal value has been disastrous for Western culture, and especially for the church. The full message of the beauty of the Gospel has been replaced by our desires to satisfy our material needs, to empirically prove our faith, and to establish political power in our world - the exact same things that Christ was tempted with and rejected in the wilderness.

Story
The great fourth-century church father Basil of Caesarea once observed that, in his time, most Christians believed that hell was not everlasting, and that all would eventually attain salvation. But today, this view is no longer prevalent within Christian communities. In this momentous book, David Bentley Hart makes the case that nearly two millennia of dogmatic tradition have misled readers on the crucial matter of universal salvation.

Story
Whether our notions of "God" are personal projections or inherited traditions, author and theologian Brad Jersak proposes a radical reassessment, arguing for a more Christlike God and a more beautiful Gospel. A More Christlike God suggests that such a God would be very good news indeed - a God who Jesus "unwrathed" from dead religion, a love that is always toward us, and a grace that pours into this suffering world through willing, human partners.

Story
Early Christianity was subversive and dangerous - dangerous for Christians, and a threat to the keepers of the old order. Most of all Christianity was countercultural. But what about contemporary American Christianity? Is it the countercultural way of Jesus or merely a religious endorsement of Americanism? In his provocative audiobook, Postcards From Babylon, Brian Zahnd challenges the listener to see and embrace a daring Jesus-centered Christianity that can again turn the world upside down.

Story
N. T. Wright argues that every world view must explain seven “signposts”, indicators inherent to humanity. Using the Gospel of John as his source, Wright shows how Christianity defines each signpost and illuminates why we so often see them as being "broken" and unattainable. Drawing on the wisdom of the Gospels, Wright explains why these signposts are fractured and damaged and how Christianity provides the vision, guidance, and hope for making them whole once again, ultimately healing ourselves and our world.

A Journey to the Very Depths of Who We Are
- By Grace on 2021-01-11
Publisher's Summary
We know Jesus the Savior, but have we met Jesus, Prince of Peace?
When did we accept vengeance as an acceptable part of the Christian life? How did violence and power seep into our understanding of faith and grace? For those troubled by this trend toward the sword, perhaps there is a better way.
What if the message of Jesus differs radically from the drumbeats of war we hear all around us?
Using his own journey from war crier to peacemaker and his in-depth study of peace in the Scriptures, author and pastor Brian Zahnd reintroduces us to the gospel of peace.

A powerful and total repudiation of war and violence!
A much needed book in our many cultures today, especially in America where I live...if only more would read it. This is a far more Christ-like understanding view of our God who is best revealed by the cross; which is THE POWER OF GOD...and how it’s destruction of sin, hatred and the forces of evil really comes to pass... not by more of the same, but with love and mercy and forgiveness; all yet to be fully-played out of course, but still something worth believing in! God is good! Truly!

A watershed moment for me
This book has been nothing short of a revelation. Although it has radically challenged my world view and understanding of scripture, it has also helped make sense of many personal convictions which seemed to be at odds with my political and religious influences. I’m still left with many questions but encouraged to continue the journey of deepening my understanding of the gospel of peace. Highly recommend!

Convincing But Incomplete
I found this book's message against violence convincing. Zahnd opens up many biblical passages in new ways I've never considered before. For all this, the book deserves 5 stars. I only wish he took the time to address common objections to a nonviolent vision. How should Christians have responded to Hitler and WWII? How can a nation begin implementing peacemaking policies? What should the common Christian do about this today? Still, if you like me wonder where war fits in a Jesus-shaped life, this book will be eye-opening.

I f I only had one book.
I have read a few hundred books overs the years and of all of them this has been the single one to have the greatest impact on my life. If I only had one book to read over and over going forward this would be it.

A call to the Jesus way of non-violence/pacifism
A wonderful invitation to lay down our swords and turn them in plowshares: I loved the last paragraph: "I know what the cynics will say. I know how the scoffers will sneer. I know the non-dreamers believing only in the brutal ways of force will laugh me off as impossibly naive. But I don’t care. I’ve grown immune to their strain of unbelief. I’ve turned a corner. I believe that what Isaiah dreamed of, Jesus died for. I believe that what Isaiah said would come to pass in the last days, Jesus inaugurated in his resurrection. I’ve caught a glimpse of the better world that can be— a world that Jesus came to give and continues to offer us. I believe the world of peace is possible in Christ. I won’t let the doomsday preppers with their Armageddon obsession talk me out of it. Jesus has already spoken the first word of a new world— the word peace. So things have changed. I have changed. I’ve prayed my last war prayer and preached my last war sermon. I’ve given up bellicose flag waving and singing lustily about bombs bursting in air. I’ve bid a final farewell to Mars. From now on I follow the Prince of Peace. I know others will come with me. Maybe you will be one of them. I hope so." #pacifism #christianity #SocialJustice #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
