For nearly 400 years, the Veil has protected us from the Fae of Alfheimr. In their absence, our lives have shifted from decadence and sin to survival and virtue under the guidance of the New Gods. Story
Mercenary Casia Greythorne cares about two things: completing whatever her latest job is and earning enough coin to buy the expensive medicine that's keeping her mentor alive. So when the king himself offers her a job, she can't resist the massive reward he offers - even if it means working with Captain Elander, the arrogant, mysterious right-hand to that king. Her partner may be infuriating, but at least their mission seems simple and quick enough: investigate the origins of the strange plague that's been ravaging their empire, help find a cure, and then call it a day.

Publisher's Summary
Gifted thief Romeria has flourished from her days as a street kid pilfering wallets to survive. Now she thrives, stealing jewels from the rich under the involuntary employ of New York City's most notorious crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom.
Her quest is straightforward: Steal a stone from Islor's sacred garden without anyone discovering her true identity, which would earn her certain death. But the identity she has inexplicably assumed is that of the captured Ybarisan princess - an enemy to Islor after she poisoned their beloved king and queen on the day she was to marry the prince.
Her betrothed, the newly crowned King Zander, detests her with every grain of his handsome being. Zander gives her a choice: life in a cell or an acquittal of all charges in exchange for her help in exposing the growing plot against him.
Romeria sees no other option and embraces the tricky role of smitten queen-to-be until she can escape. As she digs deeper, she discovers monstrous truths that could spell ruin for all.

Boring book terrible reader
I’m one of those people that once they start a book they have to finish it. The story line was dragged out and way too detailed in areas that didn’t need it. Extremely predictable. I’m so glad I purchased over audible vs reading. I would have never made it through. YAWN.
The narrator…. Worst I’ve listen to yet. Extremely monotone and very difficult to pay attention to. Her accents were spot on but also somewhat annoying and ruined the character development.
All in all: YAWN.

Great story, bad narration
Loving the story but the narration is pretty bad. Feels like I am listening to the news everytime I listen to the audiobook... It's the opposite of relaxing and takes me out of the story. That's too bad, I don't think I'll be able to finish.

Engaging fantasy
This is my first fantasy book as an adult. I read it as part of a book club, and was unsure about it based on the write up. But as soon as I started listening to it, it was engaging and hard to walk away from.
Romeria's character is well developed through the book, and the story is easy to follow, with lots of moments that leave you wondering what will happen next.
It was a book that I continued to think about after finishing it, and one that I intend to relisten to before reading the 3rd book when it gets released in the fall.

Wonderful!
exceptional read for those who love a fantasy romance. Enimies to lovers, slow burn. some decent spicey spots but not too much to take away from the story arch, lots of good battles, large world building with epic travels across the map and wonderful mystery prophacy intrigue. nattarator is out of this world with accents, emotions and such unique voices for each character I always knew who was talking. one of the best narrators I've heard.

book is very enjoyable, narration is bland
wish i had read instead of listened - please don’t continue with this robotic, lifeless narrator (she improves while reading other characters’ pitches/accents, but as the main character’s internal monologue she was intolerable)

awful narrator
I was so convinced I would love the story that for the first time I ever I didn't bother to listen to the sample clip. HUGE mistake. the narrator was unbearable. it is so robotic and over exaggerated at the same time it felt like I was a child being read to before nap time. grating and uncomfortable. I literally couldnt make it to chapter 1. Ill just have to read the hard copy I guess. still annoyed that I spent my last credit on this.

So Good!
This is not my normal genre and I’ve only ever read maybe one or two books like it. I knew to expect great things right away because I’m a huge fan of KA Tucker’s writing. I was never bored, the descriptions of the world were detailed without being daunting, the characters were interesting and well developed. There is love, action, magic, monsters, and monarchy. Highly recommend even if it’s not your normal genre! I can’t wait for the next book

narrator is good imo
I see a lot of complaints about the narrator. However, TRUST me, there can be so much worse. I can see why people wouldn't jive with her because she's very melodic and boring with not a lot of inflections, but she's not awful. Also, if there's going to be more books, I'd rather them keep her than getting a new one because then it ruins an audiable book.

Speed up the Narrator
I very much enjoyed the story. I think the combination of characters are greatly varied and I love the differences. There were a few characters I think deserved a little more to their story. The ending is a little cliche.
Now my issue, the narrator. I was bored at the first sentence. It took far to long to get those words out, I sped it up to 1.2 and it made all the difference to include making it sound like she had inflection in her voice. I feel that this book could benefit from a more creative narration.

Anxious for the next book.
Love the world building in this story. We follow our young protagonist to a strange new world and learn about the world as she does. Even after half way through we still discovering new things that questions the ways of this world. The characters are also a highlight. I love the way they start off despising the protagonist, but slowly warm up to her, each at a different pace. Can't wait until the next book.

I loved it
I still have 3.5 hours left of this book but figured I would write a quick review. I am really enjoying this book and kinda wish I had found it after the 2nd was already released because I am not looking forward to this one ending and obviously leaving certain things unanswered. The narrator is good with different accents, her normal just reading voice is a little drab but it doesn't bother me....I am sure there will be people who critique that though. The book is great though!

Narrator is laughably, embarrassingly bad
This book needs to be re-recorded. The narrator is clearly not a professional. It’s read really poorly and takes all joy out of the story. I gave her four hours to see if she improved, and she absolutely does not. She’s reading words on a page, in a terrible rhythm, not narrating, and it’s painfully obvious that she has not done this before. Do not waste a credit. I bought it on sale, and still will be returning.
