Publisher's Summary

A New York Times Bestseller

“A smart, edge-of-your-seat story with plot twists you’ll never see coming. Stacy Willingham’s debut will keep you turning pages long past your bedtime.” —Karin Slaughter

When Chloe Davis was twelve, six teenage girls went missing in her small Louisiana town. By the end of the summer, her own father had confessed to the crimes and was put away for life, leaving Chloe and the rest of her family to grapple with the truth and try to move forward while dealing with the aftermath.

Now twenty years later, Chloe is a psychologist in Baton Rouge and getting ready for her wedding. While she finally has a fragile grasp on the happiness she’s worked so hard to achieve, she sometimes feels as out of control of her own life as the troubled teens who are her patients. So when a local teenage girl goes missing, and then another, that terrifying summer comes crashing back. Is she paranoid, seeing parallels from her past that aren't actually there, or for the second time in her life, is Chloe about to unmask a killer?

From debut author Stacy Willingham comes a masterfully done, lyrical thriller, certain to be the launch of an amazing career. A Flicker in the Dark is eerily compelling to the very last page.

This narrator is not for me.

I was slightly interested in finding out who did it, but I couldn't continue with this narrator. She is not for me. If you don't mind valley girl vocal fry female character voices and overly brooding male character voices, this will be just fine for you.

Couldn’t finish this one

I can’t believe that an author like Karen Slaughter praised this utterly predictable story, which makes ample use of the “silly, helpless woman” trope. That aspect is amplified by a narrator whose take on the character makes her alternately precious and whiney. The whole thing is not worth your time.

Just when you think you know…you don’t!

This story kept me thinking and re-thinking - just when I thought I had figured it all out…the story turned again! Loved it!

A Flicker in the Dark

Just finished Flicker in the Dark! Great book. I suspected one and then I went with the other. Never suspected the third. Plot twists were numerous and great.

Okay story; did not like the narrator

The narrator made this audiobook difficult to listen to. She has a whispery voice that made me sleepy and had to turn up the volume often. She changed her voice when voicing male characters and it sounded so strange. I would have preferred this book had I read it instead.

A Little Predictable, But Overall Fun!

This was an OKAY thriller. I was able to call all of the twists in the story before they happened, but that might have been just me. I found the main character to be a little clueless which maybe lead to me figuring out plot points before she did. The narrator had a very calming, breathy voice which didn’t always work for me, and her male characters pretty much all sounded exactly the same, which maybe was a specific choice given the themes of the story. Overall it was an okay story, not my favourite, but perhaps a good book to start with if you are just getting into the thriller genre.

Fairly obvious from the start

Not the best story overall. It was pretty obvious from the beginning what was going on. The narrator has a very whiny voice as well which was annoying. The MC also makes a ton of decisions that don’t make any sense whatsoever (especially for someone with trauma) just to further the story. Mediocre murder mystery at best.

Just ok

I found the main character dramatic and boring. The ending irritated me and could have gone such a better way.

It was alright

Good story. Narrator as a woman character did great but I found it annoying when she narrated male characters.
