Publisher's Summary

Nineteen-year-old Annabelle Worthington was born into a life of privilege, but everything changed on an April day in 1912, when the sinking of the Titanic changed her family and her world forever. Finding strength within her grief, Annabelle pours herself into volunteer work, igniting a passion for medicine that would shape the course of her life.

But for Annabelle, first love, and a seemingly idyllic marriage, will soon bring grief caused by the secrets of her husband. Betrayed, and pursued by undeserved scandal, Annabelle flees New York for war-ravaged France, hoping to lose herself in a life of service. There, in the heart of the First World War, in a groundbreaking field hospital run by women, Annabelle finds her true calling, studying medicine and saving lives. When the war ends, Annabelle begins a new life in Paris - now a doctor, a mother, her past almost forgotten... Until a fateful meeting opens her heart to the world she had left behind.

Filled with breathtaking images and historical detail, Danielle Steel's novel introduces one of her most unique and fascinating characters: Annabelle Worthington, a remarkable woman - a good woman - who triumphs against overwhelming odds. More than compelling fiction, her story is a powerful celebration of life, dignity, and courage - and a testament to the human will to survive.

Interesting complex life story

Enjoyed the book, but almost stopped listening due to the narration. The narrator did a really fine job with accents, but unfortunately did a terrible job with female voices and in parts had an annoying whistle/lisp (?). It almost made me stop listening, but the story was very well imagined and written. Enjoyed the historical references as well.

A good read I thoroughly enjoyed

Too frequently stories are romance novels, or mysteries, or some other "type" of novel, but "A Good Woman" was just what I was looking for, ie. just a really good, well-developed story. I enjoyed it thoroughly and had an easy time following along, even through the stop and start of listening that inevitably occurs in the course of only listening while traveling back and forth to work. The story had good character development and was believable. I've even recommended it to my husband, because it isn't just a "chick" story either, even though it comes from a female's viewpoint.

Not a romance

I know that less-than-glowing reviews are rarely appreciated on audible, but I feel compelled to share non-the-less. I was curious to read (listen) a novel by Danielle Steel. I'm a fan of romance novels and always understood the author to be one of the best in the genre. I must say I'm a bit disappointed (perhaps my standards were much to high) in this novel. Although the story itself was lovely, the use of narrative mode kept me at arms length from the characters. As I listened, I continued to wonder what would happen, but at the same time not really feeling invested in the story. If you are looking for a romance, this isn't it. If you want a great story on the lives of women, try Firefly Lane or something similar. If you want an interesting and mostly average audio book... go for A Good Woman.

All tell, no show, and very little dialogue.

This book felt like the outline of a story. “This happened and then this happened and then this happened”… all tell, no show, and very little dialogue. If you like stories told that way, then great! If not, then steer clear.

Danielle Steel’s devoted fans love her stories, she is prolific for a reason! I am not a die-hard fan of her books; I did read a bunch in the 80s, titles like “Palomino” “The Ring” and “Daddy” spring to mind – but it’s been over 30 years so who knows. I remember giving up on her after a while because all the stories started to feel the same.

In 2008 I read “Ransom” and was pleasantly surprised! It was not at all what I expected and made me curious to read more of her recent books.

Last year I picked up “Power Play” on sale for 5$ and I think it’s one of the worst books I’ve ever read.

I was leery therefore to try another one, but Audible had another 5$ sale so I perused the discount titles and I picked this one up because it covered a time in history I enjoy reading about, and the Eiffel Tower was on the cover. I like historical fiction, particularly when it’s set in Europe and the synopsis ticked all the right boxes.

The “all tell no show” style of the story didn’t bother me at all this time because I sort of expected it, and I actually enjoyed the story! I found it very interesting, albeit pretty predictable as it follows the well established D.S. Pattern.

I think this book proved to me once and for all that (for me personally) this author’s works are hit and miss.

slow and depressing

The book was slow paced with great detail but it's hard to believe the main character wouldn't get any breaks. Needed more of her enjoying life.

I really liked this book

I found this book interesting to listen to. Brings the characters to life and how the life was in that time period. This story keeps the reader interested and wanting to find out what happens to the main characters life.

this book has too much drama!

this is like listening to Shawshank Redemption, I only finished to see if it had any "Redemption". I usually love D.S. books & have read/listened to many, but this one was " over the top with too much raw human emotion ". If you want a good cry, this is your book, but don't expect to be uplifted!

boring

To begin with, poor choice having a man read a woman's story...especially when he makes his voice go high, emulating a woman's. Obviously, many enjoy Danielle Steel, however, I find that I am not one of them. Lots of words with not much point. On the whole, rather boring.

A Wasted Credit

Now I know why I haven't read any Danielle Steel. The nauseatingly simplified characters play out a predictable story told in a boring, one-dimensional tone. The characters and the narrator are a perfect match.
