Publisher's Summary

A pragmatic philosophy more popular than ever - here are 52 ancient lessons to help you overcome adversity and find tranquility in the modern world.

An ancient belief system made new, Stoicism teaches us how to accept the things we cannot change and how to live a good life. It helps us improve our outlook, increase our well-being, and thrive in the face of adversity. But how does one live like a Stoic?

In A Handbook for New Stoics, renowned philosopher Massimo Pigliucci and practitioner Gregory Lopez guide listeners through 52 weekly lessons, each based on a common obstacle. Stressing out about a meeting at work? Try listing the things you can control and those you can’t. Epictetus writes: “In our power are thought, impulse, will to get, and will to avoid” - in other words, our own attitudes. Discover what you can control and quickly achieve peace of mind.

Featuring quotes from philosophers, analysis by the authors, and journaling activities, these lessons enable listeners to reframe their perceptions and be happier.

Best place to start a long trip

This takes a full year to get through but you come out at the end with a good knowledge of the whole process.

Great Listen so far and love the content BUT...

I love the layout, concept and content of this book so far. I am excited to listen to the rest of it and to dive in to the weekly exercises for sure! There is no downloadable PDF(s) to track your responses to the weekly exercises that I can locate. I can pause and write the questions and answers but would be nice as an additional tool to track all the responses to the weekly lesson content in one printed out lesson plan.

Very Helpful Advice for Keeping One's Cool

I happened to receive this book at just the right time. When, "helpful" friends, where giving me lots of harmful advice on how to handle a situation, including that I should be tougher, meaner, etc. This book helps one to keep their cool when addressing stressful situations. Keeping yourself in the driver's seat, and not getting upset. But, handling things smoothly. And, realizing what you can and can't control. Helped me in dealing more calmly with a painful, confrontational situation. And by ignoring other peoples' advice, that was only stirring up more drama, emotion, and less control of the situation.

Great read!

I really liked this book and how it was set up as a weekly work book. Very informative and helpful for anyone trying to help themselves deal with every day life obstacles. I really like Stoic philosophy.

This Book is Amazing! Great performance too.

Love this book! Halfway through and it’s already changed my life. I don’t necessarily like the positive thinking movement, so this book is a great practical tool to actually live a healthier, happier life. Love that they use modern language and social media examples instead of outdated examples like most books do.

and that’s a wrap

This is the first audible book that I’ve listened to in a span of a year. I’ve listened to it one chapter a week as recommended. Though there might have been weeks when I missed and had to catch up the following week.

The principles and theories are quite easy to grasp and this book is definitely what it says it is: a handbook for new stoics.

I’ll keep practicing stoicism and become the best version of myself that I can be.

Hope everyone else who find this book will find it helpful 😊

Great read

I loved this book. Each week you get a new task. It’s a great way to implement the techniques.

Just didn't care for it.

Gives 52 exercises to do for each week. I'm not the type of reader who will listen to 10 minutes and then go off for a week and come back a week later. It really doesn't work well for the audio format unless maybe you treat this book like a podcast.

I am learning much, but...

I have not finished and am really enjoying it. I am at week 11. However, I am worried that it will become more and more environmentally activistic, a path which began in week 9.

The principles transformed my life

Although, I didn’t read this book how it’s intended to be read (I read it like a regular book), I benefited greatly. And am looking into some of the resources suggested in the epilogue.

No PDFs?

Maybe it’s because it’s available with membership but, like another reviewer, I was disappointed to find there are no printable pages for the exercises.

However, I will design & create my own 52 page system for personal use based on this title so I can follow along for a year.

After a lifetime of excessive (obsessive?) study of religious & psychology modalities; no other study has been more valuable to my daily life when I actively practice the theories on Stoicism.

So…my humanness loves the books approach. My bratty ego wants worksheets.
