Publisher's Summary
On March 16, 1992, Elizabeth DeCaro, a 28 year-old mother of four, was found dead in her own home, murdered execution-style with two bullets to the head. Her husband, Rick, was immediately a suspect, having previously struck her "accidentally" with the family van after taking out a $100,000 life insurance policy on her. A Killer Among Us presents the true shocking story of Elizabeth's family and their search for justice against the man who continued to play father to the children whose mother he had killed.
This real-life case has fascinating legal elements - three trials, a death penalty conviction, and a dramatic reversal in federal court - and has received extensive local and national coverage.
Charles Bosworth Jr. is the author of the New York Times best sellers Previous Victims and Silent Witness.

Captivating story but....
Captivating story but a bit too drawn out, dramatic and syrupy for me.
The book is long but fills in the long hours during the Covid19 pandemic.
Lots of moral contradiction among the players.
And seriously nobody twigged to the grandmother's plan? It was pretty obvious, or maybe just the grandmother in me saw right through it.

Excellent Narration
I'd listen to Kevin Pierce read a grocery list. Hearing his narration is like sitting down with a favorite uncle as he tells family stories . . . his easy, relaxed delivery held my attention and I, at times, hung on his every word. This complicated, complex story was well written and even the lengthy recounting of courtroom testimony was interesting. Great story, great narration!

good true crime
This book ticks all the right boxes for true crime readers - awful murder, unfolding drama, timely revelation of crucial facts, well drawn portraits of the people affected by the crime etc. Reliable Kevin Pierce puts in his usual 5-star performance. Just one thing seemed odd to me: instead of presenting the facts in as neutral a fashion as possible with the guilty party or parties eventually being nailed, this author showed bias against the accused almost from the start. It sounded as though Bosworth was the ghost-writer and the real author was a member or members of the bereaved family. Although this jarred with me, the book is still a top read in this genre.

Well Written and a good listen!
What did you love best about A Killer Among Us?
I loved how both sides are somewhat written about. It should be titled Justice of Elizabeth.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Compelling I could not put this one down either. I felt irritated when the phone would ring or I had an appt. I just wanted to keep on listening, please do not interrupt.
Have you listened to any of Kevin Pierce’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I do not believe I have. But his performance is excellent in this read.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I cried with the family and felt their grief as though it were my own.
Any additional comments?
Written in the same great style as Ann Rule books. Worth the credit.

ANOTHER AMAZING TALE
I am not sure why, but true crime has a hold on me. I am constantly baffled by the events which take place within the pages of these stories. I want to understand how lives can spiral so far out of control, while the world moves on.
This book captivated me from the first. I had a hard time putting it down, so I did so only to sleep. As I listened to Kevin Pierce, I felt the the frustration, the agonizing helplessness of all the people who were swept up in this tragedy. Understood that there is never a "winning" side, even if justice is achieved.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes this type of book. It is cleverly written, and Kevin Pierce has an amazing way of telling the tale. Oddly, he has become one of my favorite narrators.

This is the kind of true crime book I love. The author takes his time, and not only presents the crime itself, but carefully places it in the context of the people who are affected by it. He lets us watch the family dynamics, reactions and interactions of all involved, so that, by the time the book ends, he has created a complex mosaic, with each tiny piece in its place, and the whole making an unforgettable picture.
This is reporting at its finest, with every pertinent detail explained, put into proper context, and connected to the whole in ways that make a complicated story entirely understandable and interesting. One result of this care is that Elizabeth and her family become not just participants in an event but real people, and I found that what happened to them became personal, and that I cared about them, was concerned for them, and wish them well, even now, having finished the book and my glimpse into their lives.
The writing is straightforward and low key, even when presenting emotionally charged material. The authors use of language is strong enough to give vividness to his descriptions and immediacy to events. The narration was, of course, as always with this narrator, a sterling example of excellence in all respects.

Riveting True Crime
Fascinating from beginning to end, very well written, great narration, and a close look at "pure evil". Rick DeCaro, an obvious psychopath, ruins countless lives to satisfy his selfish needs. Thankfully, the Van Isaghems banded together to obtain justice. Melanie was my hero~what a strong woman~she (and the entire family) refused to give up and spent four years fighting for Liz. The four children made me so sad. DeCaro certainly deserved his sentence!

Enjoyed listening.....
Being from this part of Missouri, I remember when this crime occurred. it was very interesting listening to the facts of the case and nothing was left out. So many details that I felt I really knew this family. If you are a reporter or an investigator kind you will really really love this book, but for a someone expecting a television episode of 48 hours or one of the others, this may not be one for you. When I say it's detailed, I really mean it is detailed. From the beginning to the end it is filled with no empty space. You get all the facts, figures, scenarios , family Dynamics, the history and everything else. I really thought the case was cut and dry, in my opinion, but I personally enjoyed following the story and the investigators but honestly if it hadn't been for the incredible narration of Kevin Pierce it would have one of those books I would have listened to over a greater period of time. But Mr. Pierce is incredible and I found myself mesmerized by his voice..... That's my two cents worth.

Could not stop listening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where does A Killer Among Us rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is my first audible book so I didn't have a reference point. I have a kindle and read when I can which in my busy schedule isn't very much. Firstly, this authors descriptions of every person was detailed and conveyed in a sequential manner. I finished the book in three days and really enjoyed my experience. In fact I just joined the platinum club!!!!
What other book might you compare A Killer Among Us to and why?
No reference as this was my first audible book
What about Kevin Pierce’s performance did you like?
His inflection and delivery were spot on!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book will make you angry, sad and vindicated!! Well written and the continuity was terrific.
Any additional comments?
A must listen if you like true crime, I am hooked!

Help Me Get Away from this book
All I can say is ths book was one of the most redundant, repetitious, boring & wordy thing I had ever heard. The author tried to hold it together in 16 hours with a glue of ‘perfection’ on every level which believe me did not stick. And for every situation written about in the story just kept repeating itself, lengthening until it got nauseous. Over & over the writing went I just couldn’t stand it anymore. STOP before I barf!
