Publisher's Summary

Two women. A history of witchcraft. And a deep-rooted female power that sings across the centuries.

Once there was a young woman from a well-to-do New England family who never quite fit with the drawing rooms and parlors of her kin.

Called instead to the tangled woods and wild cliffs surrounding her family’s estate, Margaret Harlowe grew both stranger and more beautiful as she cultivated her uncanny power. Soon, whispers of “witch” dogged her footsteps, and Margaret’s power began to wind itself with the tendrils of something darker.

One hundred and fifty years later, Augusta Podos takes a dream job at Harlowe House, the historic home of a wealthy New England family that has been turned into a small museum in Tynemouth, Massachusetts. When Augusta stumbles across an oblique reference to a daughter of the Harlowes who has nearly been expunged from the historical record, the mystery is too intriguing to ignore.

But as she digs deeper, something sinister unfurls from its sleep, a dark power that binds one woman to the other across lines of blood and time. If Augusta can’t resist its allure, everything she knows and loves—including her very life—could be lost forever.

Don't miss Hester Fox's next novel, THE BOOK OF THORNS, where two sisters who never knew the other existed meet on opposite sides during the Napoleonic Wars and must use the magic of flowers to solve the mystery of their mother’s deathwhile surviving the war raging around them...

Very entertaining with some story twists that were surprising and made me take a break to come to grips with. I would recommend for anyone who enjoys a witching story!

Could Not Put This Down

I found this book through a Twitter giveaway the author did, and I am so happy that I did!
This book - from the prologue - sent my linguistic nerd heart ablaze, and didn’t disappoint. Every time I had to pause the book (work day ended, drive was finished, etc), I couldn’t wait to start listening again!
The characters were so beautifully written, and were both relatable, and engaging.
Listening to the path of Margaret, and Augusta made you feel like you were there, in their respective timelines.

Calling it now: one of my favorite books of the year! ♥️

My only other comment is that it looks like Margaret’s chapters are misspelled. :)

Eghh.

I liked the storyline but it seemed lacking somehow. for instance the character of Chris was supposed to be some horrible abusive boyfriend and I just didn't get that out of him. Lazy maybe but not abusive ... and the ending of Margaret and Jack was abrupt and inconclusive in my opinion.

Cheesy!

I was two hours away from finishing this book but couldn't endure it another second! I thought maybe it was YA because of the ridiculous story line. The author tried to pack in way too much - eating disorder, assault, drug usage, "romance" - etc. There are way too many good books out there to waste your time reading this one.

Uncharmed

I have to say that I gave this entire book every chance I could conceive of to succeed as an interesting story that was also fully developed. I did not find it to be so. I found instead that it was difficult to get past an array, or rather a full constellation of predictable tropes.

I went along for the ride primarily because I paid a credit for what audible or perhaps, Amazon chooses to describe as a “great read”.
Of course, everyone hears a narrator in their own way, but this woman’s style of narration was quite distracting to me, as it very often sounded like someone on the radio reading the news of the day. I did not find appropriate emotional emphasis for the words that she rather often chose to deliver in a matter of fact, and at times sensational style. Odd choice I thought…

It was a bit preachy and a sort of combination of morality tales, In trying to categorize it, I would say it should be in the young adult age range.

I will be requesting a credit refund, which is something I rarely do.

Shrug

It was okay. It was a fun story to read during the month of October, but I’m not sure I’d recommend it to a friend or trash o it again.
