Publisher's Summary

Folger Shakespeare Library, The World’s Leading Center for Shakespeare Studies

The Folger Shakespeare Library, home to the world's largest Shakespeare collection, brings A Midsummer Night's Dream to life with this new full-length, full-cast dramatic recording of its definitive Folger Edition.

In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare stages the workings of love in unexpected ways. In the woods outside Athens, two young men and two young women sort themselves into couples - but not before they form first one love triangle, and then another. The king and queen of fairyland, Oberon and Titania, battle over custody of an orphan boy. Oberon uses magic to make Titania fall in love with a weaver named Bottom, in an effort to distract Titania from the custody battle. While all of this is going on, Bottom and his companions ineptly stage the tragedy of "Pyramus and Thisbe".

This new full-cast recording - based on the most respected edition of Shakespeare’s classic - expertly produced by the Folger Theatre, is perfect for students, teachers, and the everyday listener.

well done!

The acting and sound effects were amazing. My 12 year old listened to this for school and we both enjoyed the acting. Since the accent is American, it made it less of a barrier to understanding the story.

Titania's acting was rather under-whelming and flat but everyone else was excellent!

Brings the play to life

I've listened to many readings of Shakespeare's plays. This was one of the best I have listened to.

Memories from college

As an English major, I was instantly enamoured by Shakespeare. A lovely afternoon spent reading a great classic!

Performance Ruins It

The actor's performances are so bad that it feels like some sort of joke. One of the actors literally sounded like he was about to break out crying every time he spoke, no matter what he was talking about or what was happening. They were all just WAY over the top dramatic. I couldn't take them seriously.

a marvellous dream. the best play ever written...

marvellous as always: the only thing that I would probably have performed differently is the scene of Tisby's death. it should be less comic. the movie version by Michael Hoffman is exemplary in this sense

Very bad reading

I did not enjoy this reading at all. However, to be fair, I think it was made for English HS students... Look elsewhere for a great reading.
