Publisher's Summary

James Rolfe is an independent filmmaker and creator of the Angry Video Game Nerd web series and feature film. A Movie Making Nerd is a personal account of his origins, starting with an early love of making home movies before the rise of the internet and digital video. Rolfe candidly details moments of triumph and failure in both life and filmmaking—from his time in special education school and struggles during adolescence and college, to personal relationships, finding employment, and raising children. Every recollection in A Movie Making Nerd, whether happy, funny, or painful, shows how one might turn a childhood hobby into a life-long calling.

Inspiration and the F-word

The title is tremendously appropriate. You’re going to listen to the well-written tales of a young boy turned filmmaker, performed with heart by James Rolfe. The character of the AVGN is explored to a personal degree, not the kind of approach the fans have seen in the behind the scenes features. It was oddly riveting to hear about James’ life and the inspiration behind his many crafts - adding compelling author to the list. This book will remind you of the days past where the world was truly a playground of ideas and maybe blow on that dusty part of your brain that saw dragons amongst the streetlights. Recommended to fans of AVGN, filmmaking and charming coming of age stories. My only criticism is that I wish this book were twice as long, but who knows what the future holds.

A Nerd I know and Love

I've been watching AVGN and other web content created by James for about 15 years now. I love hearing about his passion for film making and how it turned this passion into his career. For any fan of AVGN and/or James, A Movie Making Nerd is a must listen.

Thoroughly enjoyed this

I had a bunch of spare credits and decided to purchase this book based off some pretty bad reviews I saw. I’ve always loved the angry video game nerd so it was just a shot in the dark. Something to kill some time. But I enjoyed it enough that I thought I’d leave a review. It’s definitely James style.. so take it for what it is. And this is my opinion but I thought the book was thoughtful and insightful.

Good job

Wish it was longer. That is my only complaint and compliment at the same time.

It's Terrific!

This is one of my favourite books now. The Angry Video Game Nerd and his movies were such an influential part of my college years, so this book has a special place in my heart. While the The Angry Video Game Nerd is Rolfe's claim to fame, the original internet review series is almost a footnote in this story. This is a book about James the filmmaker, and James the guy, who struggled with school, anxiety, girls, shitty jobs, family, health problems and loneliness. Rolfe destigmatizes topics like attending Special Ed school, dealing with social awkwardness and generalized anxiety disorder, simply by talking about them in an open and honest way. This is a book for anyone who feels alone, but it is also a book for any filmmaker, or anyone who ever shot a home movie in their backyard. I remember having people not show up to shoot, shooting in the woods, and having to edit by hooking up two VCRs to my home movie camera; references to that kind of "Cinemassacre" filmmaking are immidiately recognizable. This is one of my favourite books on filmmaking and one of my favourite biographies, and Rolfe's gentle and pleasant speaking voice make the audiobook a pleasure to listen to. An easy recommend.

If you're a fan you should enjoy it!

A nice backstory on avgn's career/life. Read well and interesting. James could do more audio books for others if he ever wanted to!

Meh

I was a huge fan of James and the AVGN back in the day, so getting an insiders look into the process was interesting but it felt felt overall.
