The always smiling and sweet face of Richard E. Grant plus the title of this book made me purchase “A Pocketful of Happiness”. I had no idea what a rip-my-heart-to-pieces experience I was in for. Every day I heard Richard talking about the absolute and perfect love of his darling, talented wife Joan and how it would end in illness. I have to admit, it was hard to be a silent witness to his unbearable agony and I wished that I could have helped in some way, as most of their friends also must have felt. At one point I felt so depressed, I thought I could not continue, but persisted. Now feel privileged to peek in the door of their beautiful and love-filled life and be happy that 2 people on this earth found their perfect partners and experienced that depth of love. So generous of Richard to share that and allow us a glimpse. Luckily he still has his darling daughter, and trunks-full of wonderful memories . He’s a great writer, and expressed himself so beautifully. Clutch your heart and read this book.

Authors reading their memoirs often, unsurprisingly, read at just the right pace and with the right inflection because they are naturally more intimate with the work. Who else could narrate a life story as authentically? Surprisingly, however, actors don’t always make good narrators of their memoirs. They might overact, and sometimes I think they expose, (through awkward cadence or pronunciation) that the work they’re reading was actually ghost-written. This is all to say that I was not disappointed by Richard E Grant’s memoir. Quite the opposite. He shows himself to be a most intelligent, articulate, and sensitive writer and narrator. He is disarmingly, charmingly authentic and eccentric — of course — as that’s what he is “in real life". Listening to him read his work was not background to my day. I had to slow down and really listen. I laughed, and I cried, and books rarely make me cry. It’s one of the best love stories I’ve ever heard. The best love stories are always true, and sometimes tragic too. Thank you, Richard E. Grant, for sharing yours.
