Engaging American post-civil war romance

This is the first book of the Daughtry trilogy from a new to me author.
It is a Christian romance with a good plot, but the emphasis is not only on the main characters' relationship.
As I haven’t read any books by Beth White before, I don’t have the parameters to compare her writing style. However, I found it to be disconnected at times.
The narrator has a good voice, but some of the characters’ tones are lacking.
