Publisher's Summary

An unique and intense tale following Elim Garak as he attempts to stitch the ravaged society of Cardassia back together.

For nearly a decade Garak has longed for just one thing—to go home. Exiled on a space station, surrounded by aliens who loathe and distrust him, going back to Cardassia has been Garak's one dream. Now, finally, he is home. But home is a world whose landscape is filled with death and destruction. Desperation and dust are constant companions and luxury is a glass of clean water and a warm place to sleep.

Ironically, it is a letter from one of the aliens on that space station, Dr. Julian Bashir, that inspires Garak to look at the fabric of his life. Elim Garak has been a student, a gardener, a spy, an exile, a tailor, even a liberator. It is a life that was charted by the forces of Cardassian society with very little understanding of the person, and even less compassion.

But it is the tailor that understands who Elim Garak was, and what he could be. It is the tailor who sees the ruined fabric of Cardassia, and who knows how to bring this ravaged society back together. This is strange, because a tailor is the one thing Garak never wanted to be. But it is the tailor whom both Cardassia and Elim Garak need. It is the tailor who can put the pieces together, who can take a stitch in time.

Like an audio message from an old friend

I have been waiting for the version which Andrew Robinson reads, and I am not disappointed. The book is amazing, and him reading it is perfection.

The story is a letter to Dr. Julian Bashir post-war when Garek has left DS9 to go home and help rebuild a decimated Cardassia. Returning home after a decade of exile, his welcome back is overshadowed by the impact of the Dominion’s attempt to eliminate the Cardassian race. He tells Bashir of the struggles his people are enduring, and his work to help “sew” society back together.

I love hearing Garek’s thoughts on events in DS9. It starts out with his perspective on his role In The Pale Moonlight - my favorite DS9 episode. It’s fascinating to hear him speak about the impact Garek’s “help” in bringing the Romulans into the war with the Dominion, has on Captain Sisko and how it affected their interactions after. You can close your eyes and picture the scenes he is referencing.

One of the best characters in the Trek franchise, Robinson reading this story feels to me like a DS9 epilogue. It’s wonderful to have another “episode” of a favourite show.

I'm a tailor, not a spy. Or am I?

This is wonderful. A Star Trek Deep Space Nine novel, first person narrative, written by the actor who played the part. To top it off, he is also the narrator of the audiobook.

Now I have to watch DS9 again.

Unexpected Classic

I originally chose this book to support the author as Garek is one of my favorite DS9 characters, not really expecting much. To my great enjoyment, the book vastly exceeded all of my expectations. From the dulcet tones of the authors voice, to the well written prose, I'd recommend this book to any DS9 fan.

Moving performance by Andy Robinson

My love for Elim Garack is so much deeper now. If you want to understand everyone’s favourite Cardassian, listen to this book!

What a touching story and portrayal of the operative who gave up happiness for duty.

Absolutely Wonderful

This was an engaging listen from start to finish. As expected, Andrew brought his character of Garak to life in a stellar way. Makes me wish for a limited tv series featuring Garak.

It is not what you'll expect.

I have been waiting to hear Andrew Robinson narrate this book for a couple of years. I almost bought the used book for $400, but I prefered to wait to hear Andrew read it himself.

To be completely honest, I was expecting a book which covered the events of post war cardassia. Instead, in the manner which we have become used to of Garak, I got a lot more. The subject of the story "post war cardassia" completely receded into the background and I got to learn about one of my favourite characters: Elim Garak. However, the subtext of course will tell you everything you need to know about post war cardassia. Except, you have to piece it together yourself.

Absolutely wonderful writing.

Andrew, please write another book. Whether it is about the cardassia occupation of Bajor, Garak's time in the order (perhaps disguised as a Klingon), or even how you ran your alteration shop. I would pre-order it today.

Absolutely amazing!!!

Andrew Robinson did an amazing job, this is such a deep dive into one of the best Star Trek characters ever created....this is the best Star Trek book ive ever read. I'm especially happy with the bisexual male representation that's not just hinted at like in the show, we all knew Garek was but as a bisexual male myself it was really reassuring to have one of my favourite characters confirmed.🥰

Thank You Andy!!!

I just want to say thank you so much to Andy for this gift to the Star Trek community. Hearing you narrate A Stitch In Time is something I've been wanting since you first wrote it.

It's wonderful to hear you as Garak again.

This is one of my favorite Star Trek novels of all time.

It's a wonderful examination of Cardassia and Garak written and now also read by the actor himself, Andrew J. Robinson.

It's a worthwhile read/listen for any Trek fan.

Magnificent! I Highly Recommend This Audiobook!

I have loved this book since it was first released in print years ago. I’ve read it approximately three times over the years. This reading of the book by the author of the book and actor who played Elim Garak is a fine production that adds to my pleasure in the book. I can guarantee I will be listening to it a lot and probably reading the print version more times. As of now this has just become one of my all time favorite audiobooks. The novel itself has remained my favorite of the DS9 franchise novels, as I’ve read most of them.

Thank you, Andrew J. Robinson for your work as the actor who gave us Elim Garak on the show DS9, for continuing the story in your novel, and now for preserving Garak’s character and voice in this audiobook. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

A very long awaited addition to my library

This was the novel I ever bought. I loved DS9, and especially Garak. I read and re-read the paperback for years. A Stitch in Time was also why I originally got an audible trial to see if it was available; It wasn't. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant triumph of a performance, nothing disappoints, and the storytelling is lively and captivating. If you love Star Trek, then this is the quintessential book about Cardassian lore. If you're just getting into the latest additions to Star Trek - and hopefully, they continue - Garak is sure to be seen on screen again.

I highly recommend this.

A return to my favorite character

A wonderful return to Elim Garak, the 3 distinct plot lines merge and dance around the show like a well choreographed waltz. Having it read by the character’s original actor, who wrote the book only enhances the great writing. I highly recommend to those who love Garak or just Deep Space Nine in general.

Absolutely Stupendous

I cannot recommend this novel more. it is outstanding on every level. So much so that I know I am going to listen to it repeatedly.

I do believe this is by far the best novel in all of Star Trek extended literature, and it plays out as an incredible memoir of a very subtly sophisticated character with a deeply hidden and mysterious past and mind within the DS9 lore.

Easily the best Star Trek book I've consumed.

I Will Return To This.

Ever since I found Audible I have been hoping Andrew Robinson would record his book and Audible would make it available. "Deep Space Nine" has always been by far my favorite Star Trek series and Garack one of my very favorite characters. My only warning to Audible customers who are interested in this book is that you should watch all of "Deep Space Nine" before listening to this book. The wait will be worth it.

An excellent story and performance!

Having just watched DS9 from start to finish for the first time, this book does a wonderful job of building that world. Andrew J. Robinson outdoes himself on the delivery and really allows you to lose yourself in the narrative. Highly recommend.

amazing

Just finished it this afternoon. It's a little long winded like any great Cardassian story, but Andy's pacing and tempo makes you want to hear more.

Worth the Wait

When I first watched DS9 on Netflix, I was immediately intrigued by Andrew J. Robinson's portrayal of the enigmatic Cardassian named Elim Garak. Soon after completing the series I checked out a paperback copy of A Stitch In Time from my local library. I absolutely loved the book, and was so I delighted when I learned the audiobook would be narrated by the author. It truly is Garak's voice reading his "memoirs of a Cardassian tailor." I am beyond thankful that I was able to be recaptured by so much of what first drew me to Elim Garak while listening to this book. Thank you, Andy - this truly is a gift to your many fans, including myself, and hearing you read as Garak was well worth the wait.
