Publisher's Summary

An unique and intense tale following Elim Garak as he attempts to stitch the ravaged society of Cardassia back together.

For nearly a decade Garak has longed for just one thing—to go home. Exiled on a space station, surrounded by aliens who loathe and distrust him, going back to Cardassia has been Garak's one dream. Now, finally, he is home. But home is a world whose landscape is filled with death and destruction. Desperation and dust are constant companions and luxury is a glass of clean water and a warm place to sleep.

Ironically, it is a letter from one of the aliens on that space station, Dr. Julian Bashir, that inspires Garak to look at the fabric of his life. Elim Garak has been a student, a gardener, a spy, an exile, a tailor, even a liberator. It is a life that was charted by the forces of Cardassian society with very little understanding of the person, and even less compassion.

But it is the tailor that understands who Elim Garak was, and what he could be. It is the tailor who sees the ruined fabric of Cardassia, and who knows how to bring this ravaged society back together. This is strange, because a tailor is the one thing Garak never wanted to be. But it is the tailor whom both Cardassia and Elim Garak need. It is the tailor who can put the pieces together, who can take a stitch in time.

Fantastic!

Loved him as an actor, even more as a writer and narrator. Brings the book alive in ways reading it yourself just doesn’t, thanks Andrew!

Wonderful continuation of Garaks story

The only way to truly experience this work is as read by the author. Hearing Garak's voice again, with the inflections we have so dearly missed, was a definite treat. Filling in events on Cardassia after the end of DS9, and giving details to what came before, was very welcome. Finishing the book made me want to see the entire thing as a Garak miniseries.

Robinson's voice acting was great for Garak of course, some other characters were very serviceable, especially Odo. Some were not as strong, but didn't detract. It would have been too good to have Marc Alaimo as Dukat.

Overall, absolutely fantastic. Every fan of DS9 should enjoy this. I wish we could have a sequel

Absolutely amazing!!!

Andrew Robinson did an amazing job, this is such a deep dive into one of the best Star Trek characters ever created....this is the best Star Trek book ive ever read. I'm especially happy with the bisexual male representation that's not just hinted at like in the show, we all knew Garek was but as a bisexual male myself it was really reassuring to have one of my favourite characters confirmed.🥰

It is not what you'll expect.

I have been waiting to hear Andrew Robinson narrate this book for a couple of years. I almost bought the used book for $400, but I prefered to wait to hear Andrew read it himself.

To be completely honest, I was expecting a book which covered the events of post war cardassia. Instead, in the manner which we have become used to of Garak, I got a lot more. The subject of the story "post war cardassia" completely receded into the background and I got to learn about one of my favourite characters: Elim Garak. However, the subtext of course will tell you everything you need to know about post war cardassia. Except, you have to piece it together yourself.

Absolutely wonderful writing.

Andrew, please write another book. Whether it is about the cardassia occupation of Bajor, Garak's time in the order (perhaps disguised as a Klingon), or even how you ran your alteration shop. I would pre-order it today.

I love Garak

I was expecting an entertaining book as a Star Trek fan, but was blown away by the fantastic and meaningful writing, engaging story, all combined with top notch performance by Robinson. Bravo.

Like an audio message from an old friend

I have been waiting for the version which Andrew Robinson reads, and I am not disappointed. The book is amazing, and him reading it is perfection.

The story is a letter to Dr. Julian Bashir post-war when Garek has left DS9 to go home and help rebuild a decimated Cardassia. Returning home after a decade of exile, his welcome back is overshadowed by the impact of the Dominion’s attempt to eliminate the Cardassian race. He tells Bashir of the struggles his people are enduring, and his work to help “sew” society back together.

I love hearing Garek’s thoughts on events in DS9. It starts out with his perspective on his role In The Pale Moonlight - my favorite DS9 episode. It’s fascinating to hear him speak about the impact Garek’s “help” in bringing the Romulans into the war with the Dominion, has on Captain Sisko and how it affected their interactions after. You can close your eyes and picture the scenes he is referencing.

One of the best characters in the Trek franchise, Robinson reading this story feels to me like a DS9 epilogue. It’s wonderful to have another “episode” of a favourite show.

Beautiful tale

This story is sad and funny, touching and haunting. Thank you to Andrew Robinson. Loved it. Garak is an amazing character, and this is a satisfying telling of one man's experience of Cardassia's fall (with some hope for its future).

Absolutely Wonderful

This was an engaging listen from start to finish. As expected, Andrew brought his character of Garak to life in a stellar way. Makes me wish for a limited tv series featuring Garak.

Moving performance by Andy Robinson

My love for Elim Garack is so much deeper now. If you want to understand everyone’s favourite Cardassian, listen to this book!

What a touching story and portrayal of the operative who gave up happiness for duty.

I'm a tailor, not a spy. Or am I?

This is wonderful. A Star Trek Deep Space Nine novel, first person narrative, written by the actor who played the part. To top it off, he is also the narrator of the audiobook.

Now I have to watch DS9 again.
