What the critics say

"It's hard not to love a book dedicated to the Glee star's grandmother...Colfer gets off many good lines [and] the nifty ending ties the plot's multiple strands up while leaving room for further fairy tale adventures." (Publishers Weekly)

Fun, engaging story

Chris Colder channels the fantastical tales of Enid Blyton with the zany characters of Roald Dahl. While this story isn't quite on par with those two authors that shaped my childhood, I couldn't help but think of them as I listened to the author read his fun, engaging story.

Super enjoyable

I have Chris colfer’s other books ( i.e land of stories) and thoroughly enjoy both series its a great story with all the books connected, the tale of magic even though it came out after it a great add on if you have all ready read land of stories because the characters make more sense, a definite must read and listen to especially with Chris Colfer’s reading of the book you get to hear how the character sound in his head with being the author and that’s a treat

Great story

The only thing that bothered me is the over use of the work ‘however.’ Still a great story and the narrator really brings everything to life!

Inspired by Harry Potter but not inspiring.

loved the politics but it was didactic and on the nose writing. the dialog style of characters repeating back a statement as a question was tedious. children's literature can have depth of meaning while still being eloquently simple.
I think Chris has great ideas to share, his style just has to catch up with the message.

A beautiful story with a beautiful message

This story holds a a mirror of fantasy over many subjects we deal with in our day to day lives, such as discrimination, acceptance of different groups, empowerment and even political corruption. Worth the read and the listen!

Magically wonderful

I really enjoyed listening to this on my drives home and when I needed to keep myself from falling asleep at work. It is well written and full of real problems that people face all over (with a magical twist of course.) I hope that others can enjoy this book as much as I have and continue to have hope and compassion for the future.

Extremely well performed!

Well written! Interesting story with some unexpected twists. Extremely well performed! I kept yelling “remember you can do magic” when the kids keep forgetting that they could. Had to remember that it was written about kids for kids. LOL

Amazing! Exciting!

I absolutely can not wait for the next book to come out! Well written, and read by the author! I can’t stand when the narrator of a book is bland and monotone, and Chris was anything but that! He put feeling and emotion into each character, and left me wanting more!

Love these Books-just not the music

Our whole family loves Chris Colfer’s book series! My only feedback is to drop the musical interludes throughout this book. I didn’t like that addition to the audio book.

Women without books?

Ugh! Women should be aloud to read! The story was great but I hate that women were not aloud to read! Women all over the world love books! That law is just crap! Thank god it is fake!
