In the aftermath of 9/11 Kevin Hazzard felt that something was missing from his life—his days were too safe, too routine. A failed salesman turned local reporter, he wanted to test himself, see how he might respond to pressure and danger. He signed up for emergency medical training and became, at age twenty-six, a newly minted EMT running calls in the worst sections of Atlanta. His life entered a different realm—one of blood, violence, and amazing grace.

But in his downtime, Kevin reflected on how people’s facades drop away when catastrophe strikes. As his hours on the job piled up, he realized he was beginning to see into the truth of things. There is no pretense five beats into a chest compression, or in an alley next to a crack den, or on a dimly lit highway where cars have collided. Eventually, what had at first seemed impossible happened: Kevin acquired mastery. And in the process he was able to discern the professional differences between his freewheeling peers, what marked each—as he termed them—as “a tourist,” “true believer,” or “killer.”

It was a good "read". It held my interest for two plane rides so that's good! I work in EMS so I was able to find parallels in my practice. Some of it was outlandish to me but I cannot speak for everyone.

I listened to this book at three stages of my career thus far: while in paramedic school, fresh out of school and most recently at the two-year mark of my career. Regardless of how many times I listen to A Thousand Naked Strangers, I feel captivated every time. However, throughout each “read”, this book has had the fascinating ability to resonate with me in different ways. My progression throughout my career has allowed me to interpret the words in a different light each time. Hazzard has a gift for storytelling, but it’s his incredibly ability to convey tone in his words which truly enthralls me and allows me to relate to this book time and again in different ways regardless of where I’m at in my career. The eagerness and fascination of a young EMT; the dread of your first solo call as a Paramedic and the performance anxiety; the partners that come and go; the system that slowly passes you by; Kevin Hazzard exemplifies all the emotions, there bizarre context, the highs and the lows of working in EMS while delivering his message through a series of interesting anecdotes. Truly one of my favourite books. George Newbern does a fantastic job at narrating the book. There’s a few times where he mispronounces the names of medications and that kind of seems like something that could’ve been researched somewhere in the editing process, but definitely nothing worth docking a star over. 5/5 overall for narrating and for the story.
