I was fascinated by the story, impressed by the author’s extensive research and especially by how he was able to present the complexity of the case and the main character in such an easy-to-understand format, while at the same time reflecting on what both things — the case and the “villain” — meant in the author’s own life.

I almost gave up on this book due to the first 6 chapters being about the author trying to talk to Malcolm Macarthur. This book is unlike most true crime books because this is as much about the author as the criminal. I went back and forth on this book. At times, the way O'Connell shows obsession with MacArthur and with writing this book it's self. At the end I'd day I enjoyed this book. it's unusual true crime but in a good way. This is a story of a man as much as crime. The crime of course can't he separated from the man. This story doesn't forget the horror this man commited. It attempts to explore who this man is. As someone who wants to understand thr why's I appreciate the attempt made here.
