Publisher's Summary

From the twelve-million copy bestselling author of the Lewis trilogy comes a chilling new mystery set in the isolated Scottish Highlands.

A tomb of ice

A young meteorologist checking a mountain top weather station in Kinlochleven discovers the body of a missing man entombed in ice.

A dying detective

Cameron Brodie, a Glasgow detective, sets out on a hazardous journey to the isolated and ice-bound village. He has his own reasons for wanting to investigate a murder case so far from his beat.

An agonizing reckoning

Brodie must face up to the ghosts of his past and to a killer determined to bury forever the chilling secret that his investigation threatens to expose.

Set against a backdrop of a frighteningly plausible near-future, A Winter Grave is Peter May at his best.

Superb

Peter May takes risks so his writing is not just good but very very good. Strong characters who come to life on the pages. Beautiful descriptions of the landscape.
Peter Forbes’ performance is simply great.

A Winter Grave

This is not the authors best book. The voice of the Detective Inspector was annoying, and the Detective Constables continuous complaining was also annoying. In saying this,I was somewhat gripped to hear how it ended.

Futuristic view of the environment shows versatility of this author

I really enjoyed all aspects of the Lewis Trilogy historical fiction so was surprised to find Peter May expanding his capabilities with a futuristic storyline. As with his other novels, this was well researched and compelling, supported by excellent narration.

A cautionary tale; a story of redemption

May has again utilized the dual timeline format so familiar to fans of the Lewis Trilogy, but by using modern time and the future in this novel. He keenly describes the state of our antipathy to the environment and government now, and the cost of it in the future, through a well-woven story of one detective, searching to bring closure and meaning to his small part in it. Lost love, our own mortality and our ability to ignore the unpleasant - are interlaced into this story full of action and his always heart-wrenching descriptions of Scotland now and in the future.

Not just a mystery

Peter May can be counted on to write a smashing mystery, but this latest book is much more than that. The futuristic setting and the intense personal relationships of the characters, what it means to be a parent or a child and how we face death are all woven together tightly in a compelling and worthy read. May's ability to bring the setting, natural and fantasy, into the plot creates clear and complex images. Frankly, I'm a little annoyed because I couldn't get to sleep while I was reading this because I just HAD to listen to one more chapter, and another and so on.

boring

I was hoping for a murder mystery. There was far too much boring drivel about the characters backstory and relationships that I really don't care about and not enough about murder or mystery.
