Story
New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the two—but they’d been equally desperate. Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt. Eve Dallas looks over the scene.

Story
The body was left in a dumpster like so much trash, the victim a woman of no fixed address, known for offering paper flowers in return for spare change - and for keeping the cops informed of any infractions she witnessed on the street. But the notebook where she scribbled her intel on litterers and other such offenders is nowhere to be found. Then Eve is summoned away to a nearby building site to view more remains - in this case decades old, adorned with gold jewelry and fine clothing - unearthed by recent construction work.

Story
The scene in the West Village studio appears to be classic crime-of-passion: two wineglasses by the bed, music playing, and a young sculptor named Ariel Byrd with the back of her head bashed in. But when Dallas tracks down the wealthy Upper East Side woman who called 911, the details don’t add up. Gwen Huffman is wealthy, elegant, comforted by her handsome fiancé as she sheds tears over the trauma of finding the body - but why did it take an hour to report it? And why is she lying about little things?

Story
While Eve examines a fresh body in Washington Square Park, her husband, Roarke, spots a man among the onlookers he’s known since his younger days on the streets of Dublin. A man who claims to be his half brother. A man who kills for a living - and who burns with hatred for him. Eve is quick to suspect that the victim’s spouse - resentful over his wife’s affair and poised to inherit her fortune - would have happily paid an assassin to do his dirty work. Roarke is just as quick to warn her that if Lorcan Cobbe is the hitman, she needs to be careful.

Story
It was a glittering event full of A-listers, hosted by Eliza Lane and Brant Fitzhugh, a celebrity couple who’d conquered both Hollywood and Broadway. And now Eve Dallas has made her entrance—but not as a guest. After raising a toast, Fitzhugh fell to the floor and died, with physical symptoms pointing to cyanide, and the police have crashed the party. From all accounts, he wasn’t the kind of star who made enemies. Everyone loved him—even his ex-wife. And since the champagne cocktail that killed him was originally intended for Eliza, it’s possible she was the real target.

Story
Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body - and killed him. After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team - and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed - it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close.

On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan's neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel's best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanel's blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional.

The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park's ice skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be. Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD, but never one like this. Publisher's Summary
"Whether this is the listener's first or fiftieth In Death story, they're guaranteed an enjoyable listening experience."-AudioFile on Abandoned in Death
Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage’s life hangs in the balance—in the new In Death novel by New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.
The woman’s body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground. She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied. But other things were very wrong—like the tattoo and piercings, clearly new. The clothes, decades out of date. The fatal wound hidden beneath a ribbon around her neck. And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child.
Eve Dallas turns to the department’s top profiler, who confirms what seems obvious to Eve: They’re dealing with a killer whose childhood involved some sort of trauma—a situation Eve is all too familiar with herself. Yet the clues suggest a perpetrator who’d be roughly sixty years old, and there are no records of old crimes with a similar MO. What was the trigger that apparently reopened such an old wound and sent someone over the edge?
When Eve discovers that other young women—who physically resemble the first victim—have vanished, the clock starts ticking louder. But to solve this case she will need to find her way into a hidden place of dim light and concrete, into the distant past, and into the cold depths of a shattered mind.

Not her typical plot.
After creating 54 books you would think JD Robb would not be creating new twists and turns. This is the first book I've listened to in one day start to finish. My spouse and I listened together and kept arguing over who the killer would be. At different times we were sure we knew who it was, but JD Robb managed to surprise us both.

In death series
Susan did it again…..she is the only one to be the narrator for this series. And Nora always come up with fantastic ideas for new story line for this series. I buy the 📚 books too, besides listening to them. If you want to listen/buy the books start with book one, don’t skip around the series. Each book adds new characters, they are murder mystery stories with sadness and humor and love.Love ❤️ this is the only full series I have read from beginning to end. I hope Nora keeps on writing this series. Only suggestion I have is add some new characters, don’t get me wrong I love ALL the characters in the stories…..don’t want to lose one. It doesn’t seem like the characters in this book are the same as her other books. They are completely lacking in what makes them great.
The storyline is very hard to follow. It’s confusing, too weird.

Disappointing
Compared to the rest of the series this is disappointing.
You start out with too much time in the head of a suicidal druggie unwed mother and then from the POV of a female kidnap victim before she is murdered and Eve Dallas and Peabody have a case.
The rest of the book is the investigation linking these events with occasional changes to the POV of another of the kidnapped women.
There are no major developments in the continuing cast of characters we have grown to know and love and the techniques being used to track the mentally unstable killer we have seen before. Eve is growing better at dealing with memories of her own early childhood trauma.
OK, but too much time with unpleasant people and the depiction of the mad villain is less realistic than we have seen before.
The only promising thing is that J D Robb is setting up another visit to Ireland with Roark’s relatives and a luxury Greek vacation in a future book or two. Two young people are now interns and we may see more of them in the future.

Not this one
This is the worse book that I made it through. The narrator, well, I should of returned this book when I heard her voice at the get go…
Every character sounded the same (except the whiny boy and the Scot/Irish husband). This made it very hard to tell who was speaking/and follow. The futuristic slang words were just corny: link, tag me, tubes etc.
The repetition, repetition and did I say repetition? I wanted to bang my head against the wall. Don’t waste the time. I know I wish I didn’t!
