Publisher's Summary

Neighborhood tensions reach a breaking point in the finale of New York Times best-selling author Mary Monroe's captivating series that sweeps listeners back to 1930's Alabama and into the lives of two neighboring couples whose deceitful friendships and imperfect marriages are just the beginning of their troubles...

In this captivating Depression-era set novel by New York Times best-selling author Mary Monroe, two couples find their grudges endangering more than their Alabama small town's deceptive peace...

When good-time couple Milton and Yvonne Hamilton moved one house over from the respectable-but-restless Odell and Joyce Watson, it was a fast friendship of shared secrets - and secret jealousies and betrayals. Their alliance was bound to crash and burn, but the Hamiltons won't quite let the flame die out, even after scandalous accusations get them arrested...

Odell would do anything to be free of his bootlegging, blackmailing, money extorting neighbors and recover the peaceful - and financially prosperous - life he and Joyce once had. But Milton and Yvonne seem to always bounce back from bad luck, and this time they've returned angrier, and greedier, than ever. Determined to get what Odell "owes" them, the Hamiltons have a big surprise for Joyce too, one that shows how far they will go to get revenge...

Now pushed past his breaking point, Odell is sure he's got a foolproof plan to end the scheming once and for all. But it soon spirals into lies, shattering violence, and permanent damage that will roil their tranquil community, and alter his and Joyce's world forever...

Great Ending

The book tells an interesting story about Black folks who are neighbors. There’s a whole host of characters with interesting back stories that do not distract from the story as a whole. The ending is very tidy and wraps up the storylines well. It seems everyone got what was coming to them. The narration is good except for Joyce’s voice. The person narrating Joyce’s voice is pronouncing every single letter of every single word. It is not the way people talk in real life and it was very distracting to the story. Joyce’s character is also annoying. She’s not realistic and her actions are questionable. It was very difficult to relate to Joyce. The middle part of the book was often repetitive and moved slow in certain parts, but the ending was worth it.

Mary did it again....

Mary Monroe, did it again. She picked up where she left off, from the other books, One House Over and Over the Fence. Milton and Yvonne are back on their scamming, especially Odell. Odell, what a man....he squeezed his ass into Joyce's life, by lying and keeping up an image. Little did she know her "perfect" husband was living a double life, with a whole family in another town every weekend, taking from her parents store and their account. I never would have thought Odell would go to the extremes to cover up his lies, but then again...I shouldn't have expected any less. Boy oh boy, ones image is everything, especially to men, they can't stand a bruised ego or will let their pride get in the way of everything. This book is everything. Somebody and something finally shut Joyce up, I hate that it was her own husband. You know the saying "watch the company you keep" . When things catch up to you. I wonder what's the next series for Mary Monroe, I know it's gonna be good.

Good ending.

The ending to this book could’ve and should’ve been at the end of book 1.

Listening to this series. Day #3. Book #3.

That says it all. 3 book series in 3 days. I couldn't stop listening. I was on the hook from Day 1 Book 1. The time period was perfect. I had to laugh out loud sometimes. I had quite a few very loud verbal reactions.... lol.

suspenseful

The narrators were great. I'm glad there was different readers for all of the characters

I'm can't believe how dense some of these characters were and im not talking about Joyce. How could you think a person you were blackmailing would still consider you a friend. I'm happy the swamp monsters got what was coming to all of them I only wished Betty jean would have got what was coming to her too but a life of poverty would do just as well. The middle lagged like the second book but im glad everything was wrapped up with no loose ends

The ending was the Best Part

The ending is what captured my attention. It was too much focus on the blackmail. But the end did not disappoint Im patiently waiting to read book #3
