Story
The so-called Tibetan Book of the Dead has been renowned for centuries as a cornerstone of Buddhist wisdom and religious thought. More recently, it has become highly influential in the Western world for its psychological insights into the processes of death and dying - and what they can teach us about the ways we live our lives. It has also been found to be helpful in the grieving process by people who have recently lost their loved ones. This authoritative translation preserves the form and spirit of the original and was prepared especially for Western audiences.

Story
In March of 1980, college senior Peter Panagore went ice climbing on the world-famous Lower Weeping Wall, along the Ice Fields Parkway in Alberta, Canada. His climbing partner was an experienced ice climber, but Panagore was a novice. On their descent, they became trapped on the side of the mountain. As the sun set, he was overcome by exhaustion and hypothermia. He died on the side of that mountain in 1980. In his minutes on the other side, he experienced hell, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

Publisher's Summary
Adventures in the Afterlife is a powerful journey of spiritual awakening; a bold quest for answers and enlightenment. The old assumptions of heaven are confronted and an expansive new vision of our continuing life is presented. After being diagnosed with cancer, William Buhlman, author of Adventures Beyond the Body, pursued answers to the mysteries of our existence after death. Confronting his mortality, he experienced profound insights into what lies beyond our physical body. Our journey into the next life is the basis for Adventures in the Afterlife. The author chronicles his out-of-body experiences and lucid dreams through the eyes of a fictional character, Frank Brooks. The insights are sometimes surprising, but a clear message is always apparent; we are powerful, spiritual beings and we shape our reality now and in the future. The purpose of this book is to prepare us for the many thought responsive environments we will experience. William Buhlman teaches and lectures worldwide on the subjects of out-of-body experiences and spiritual empowerment. Visit the author at astralinfo.org.

A linear narrative format helps explain Afterlife
William Buhlman's other books, his youtube or podcast interviews and talks, and his How To Have an Out of Body cd series have made me already familiar with his work. So, I wasn't sure what to think when he announced he was making a fictional book.
But, after reading and listening to Adventures in the Afterlife, I "get it." Many of the experiences he has previously talked about are in here. And, like many other authors or teachers or experiencers of OBE in a greater reality usually not perceived by many people, the stories shared were previously offered in bits and pieces. By writing this book, William Buhlman was able to share various experiences in a linear fashion. This makes things a bit easier to grasp. Not that his experience was linear, but by this type of presentation, the "other side" was introduced in a more organized fashion.
If you enjoy this book, be sure to read the books by Robert Monroe, Richard Martini, Michael Newton, Annie Kagan, Elisa Medhus, Gary Zukav, Eben Alexander, Brian Weiss, and if you want to dig deeper, want to "pop the hood, and see how it works" then read Tom Campbell - all these authors are on Audible.
The great thing abut Adventures in the Afterlife is that it works to introduce people new to the concept of a greater reality, and also serves to make sense of all the bits and pieces people have heard from OBE experiences.
Interesting listening, mind-expanding concepts.

Fantastic!
This book really opened up my mind and helped me stop being so trapped by traditional beliefs of the world. It will made very intrested in OBE's. I do know for a fact an afterlife does exist due to me having a brief NDE when I was younger and this book just solidified a lot of that for me.

Essential reading for your spiritual journey
This is an exceptional overview of what happens after death.
I read a lot of spiritual text and I must say that this book did seem authoritative and fill information gaps that I could not find elsewhere. The part where there was a disconnect at least from my point of view, was with regards to Karma and reincarnation. I would definitely recommend this to someone interested in spirituality.

If Heaven is like that, I think I'll reincarnate!
What would have made Adventures in the Afterlife better?
I don't know if a book written from this perspective could have been made better. It just did not jive with me.
What could William Buhlman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
See above.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She sounded kind of pedantic to me. Very clear, yes, but tense. I would have listened to the book, though, had it not been the content. Also, why choose a female narrator for a book that has been written in the first-person narrative of a man? It made associating the reader as the person who tells the story very difficult.
What character would you cut from Adventures in the Afterlife?
N/A
Any additional comments?
I like NDE-style books in general. I greatly enjoyed, for example, Jeffrey Long's first book "Evidence of Afterlife", Eben Alexander's first book "Proof of Heaven", Penny Sartori's "Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences", and Michael Newton's "Journey of Souls". All very fascinating!
But the author of this book seems to have superimposed his religious views on how the afterlife should be. I understand this book is somewhat based on his own NDE experiences/visions, but if that is the case, I can only think it is the initial reality he has created based on his expectations in this lifetime.
Quoting: »It is comforting to know heaven is every bit the paradise that I imagined it would be. Most of the people here are busy pursuing their creative interests while other are studying the Bible. I often see people in the parks enjoying picnics, painting, and playing all kinds of sports, while sound of inspirational music can be heard everywhere.
[...]
One popular beach is famous for its magnificent sand sculptures; incredible creations portraying important events in the Bible. They're so detailed that they appear to come to life. Most people live in small communities with beautiful white churches located at their centers. With wide sidewalks radiating outward, these churches are the focal points of all major social activity. Individual homes are similar to each other. They're about the same size with white picket fences, muted colors, large windows, and wide front porches. Even though I've never seen anyone cutting the grass, the yards and hedges are always emerald green and perfectly manicured. Each home has an array of flowers in the yard. Window boxes overflowing with color, and a shining silver cross on the front door.
The neighborhoods I've visited project a distinct feeling of comfort, peace, and sanctuary. Every Sunday morning we attend church, and praise our Lord. Our pastor imparts passionate sermons that are truly inspirational. He seems to know every verse of the Bible from memory, and brings Biblical stories to life. Everyone respects him. During church services, we thank God for the miraculous gift of our eternal life, and our acceptance to the his heavenly kingdom. We sing hymns of joy and praise, and I'm always inspired when I witness so many moved to tears as they worship our Savior. Our choir sings Amazing Grace with such power that the entire church seems to vibrate. Every week, several in our congregation are so overwhelmed by the rapture that they collapse in ecstasy. Each week I attend regular church functions where we discuss the Gospels and the works of the Lord. We also have weekly socials, dinners, prayer circles, and even dances. Various church discussion groups offer Bible readings, and explore the word of God in detail. Several people I know are experts on specific books of the Bible, and can repeat the entire text from memory. As I explore this world of peace and harmony, I realize that no atheists or false religions are found in heaven. We all share the same beliefs, and are told by our pastor that we are the chosen of God. I imagine that the non-believers are in some dreadful place.»
Okay, that's enough for me! I'm returning this "gem".

Repetitious
I was disappointed with this book. The same basic points are made over and over and over... A fair amount of the second part of the book is more like guided meditation than an informative account of the afterlife. I found some parts to be a bit preachy. The author never explains in any detail the basis for his knowledge about the afterlife, so there's no foundation of credibility, in my view. #SelfDiscovery #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes
