Publisher's Summary

Experience the internet's most talked-about book, now a major motion picture, from Anna Todd, the writer Cosmopolitan called “the biggest literary phenomenon of her generation”. Now with a new bonus chapter read by the film’s Hero Fiennes Tiffin and a letter to listeners read by Anna Todd.

There was the time before Tessa met Hardin, and then there’s everything after.... Life will never be the same. #Hessa

Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.

But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, and tattoos, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.

But he’s also rude - to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does - until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss, it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.

He'll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin's prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless...could this be love?

How to get into and stay in an obviously abusive relationship

On a positive note, the narrator was alright. Unfortunately, the story glamorizes unhealthy and emotionally abusive relationships. Everything the main character does to justify how she is being treated is incredibly sad. I would be fine with the story if it read as a commentary of how abuse cycles start and continue, but it is not written as an insightful or cautionary tale, but more as a fairy tale (albeit with a ending that is not positive but I would bet on the cycle continuing in the series).
Also, while I felt bad for the main character, I found her quite unlikeable for the majority of the book because she was just a mean person (this is just a personal opinion, I know some people like typically unlikeable characters).

Terrible message. Don’t let your daughters read this.

Yet another story showcasing a man treating a woman like absolute crap and her just eating it up like candy. Lovely Anna Told, help teach another generation of young ladies that when a guy is mean to them and abusive to them then that means he must actually be madly in love with them. Don’t read it, don’t let your daughters read it. I got halfway through and had to stop before my eyeballs fell out of their sockets from rolling my eyes so much.

READ the fan fiction/book! Trust me!

I've been a HUGE fan of the fan fiction and I thought this would be perfect to listen to the actual published version. I was wrong. The only chapter I fully listened to was chapter 100, because of Hero of course (1.5 stars are just for Hero). I would say if you want to have a better picture of the story, read the fanfic on Wattpad. The readers also often comment on the book and it makes the experience so much better. I would also just like to say that it was a story written for teenage girls based off a bad boy Harry Styles...I mean... It is not the perfect book and I get why some comment on how toxic their relationship is. It makes you angry, sad, ANNOYED, and honestly it is SO extremely messy but that was just simply how most of fanfics were when they were in there prime. I'm so very passionate about the books but this makes it dull. This narration somehow made me feel so distant and reading it was like watching a movie, so I highly suggest that more for anyone who was not happy with this and wants to experience the roller coaster that is Hessa. <3

Loved It

I am in tears after the final chapter. One of the best books I have ever read, or listened to I suppose.

Terrible

If you don't want to rip every single hair out of your head from how annoying this book is, don't read it. It's just a repetition of them fighting and making up, then having sex and fighting and making up again. She is honestly the biggest idiot I've ever read about, absolutely infuriating. Can't even describe how bad this book it, as well as the following books in the sequels. SAVE YOURSELF!!!

Could not get into it

The narrator sounds like a robot. No emotion or personality. Couldn’t even give it a chance. Wanted to like it but couldn’t.

Repetitive

We've all had bad relationships but other than steamy make up sex i kept wanting to stop the cycle of gas lighting and emotional abuse. i get to rapt in stories to suffer the next in the series.

I. Can’t. Even.

And you shouldn’t either. I’m a big fan of a good YA novel, but this nonsense is less YA novel escapism and more “Best Ways to Convince Yourself To Stay in an Abusive Relationship.” Y’all. It’s awful. The reader sounded like she was talented, but I honestly wonder how many times she needed to take a break during recording to gag. There was ZERO character development. Hardin was an idiot— I don’t care if he had a mysterious British accent. I’ll end this review here as I am heading to the ophthalmologist soon— I’m afraid I sprained my eyeballs from rolling them so many times trying to listen to this drivel.

Juvenile

I totally understand all the rage from teens and young adults about this love story. My maturity as an older, sexually experienced woman, this novel is extremely unrealistic from a sexual POV. I actually finished this book because I was curious as to what Hardin’s secret was. The storyline is ok, but definitely could have been better put together. Sorry, no woman as inexperienced as Tess can actually orgasm that soon into a sexual relationship. As for Hardin, his sexual releases are on point (mere minutes) for his age. The writing was no Pulitzer winner but I’ll give this novel 3 stars. Anna Todd is clearly a new author but has excellent potential. I’ll go ahead and skip the next in the series, and look into more of her novels later in her career.

Hit close to home

Being a survivor of a toxic/abusive relationship this story hit close to home and made me want to yell at Tessa to run and hide. The dialogue was cheesy but the situations were so very real and most almost mirrored my past. I hope when people read this story it makes them realize why it’s so hard sometimes for people to leave a toxic relationship. When it’s bad it’s so so bad but when it’s good it’s so so good. Would had been 5 stars if it wasn’t for the cringy dialogue.

Endless unrealistic sexcapades...

In graphic detail, it's all sex, unrealistic sexual encounters, instant gratification and ridiculous situations. There is a little bit of a story amongst the sex, but I struggled to finish this book. I'll not be reading anymore by this author, and in fact returning this book for refund or exchange. (my first return)!

Really unremarkable

I was very disappointed in this book. It was performed well, but the story itself is really just awful and uninteresting.

written for a teenage girl. voiced by a preteen. don't recommend. main character is weak and annoying and whiny. voice for Harden is a poor excuse for British accent.

Lackluster...why did I listen to this book?

The story was very reminiscent of Fifty Shades of Gray with way less exciting sex scenes. Writing was sub par and there was too much repetition in Tessa and Harding’s interactions. There were 99 chapters in this book and it could have easily been told in 30. Elizabeth was not the most exciting reader and made the words of the books sound even less convincing. The last chapter was the most intriguing because Hero was a wonderful reader! The reader makes the biggest difference even when the book was poorly written.

Manipulative

The overall story is good, but is really pretty abusive.Hardin’s attitude towards Tessa is really shitty,he says that he loves her but he still does the prove for the bet instead of being honest he lies and his “excuse”for her to forgive him is “I’m sorry baby please forgive me,it was all before”.No it wasn’t that night he said I love Tess but still she only stays because Hardin is mysterious, has tattoos, and a cute accent. The book is good but the story is really really shit the other books are a bit better.
