Publisher's Summary

Experience the internet's most talked-about book, now a major motion picture, from Anna Todd, the writer Cosmopolitan called “the biggest literary phenomenon of her generation”. Now with a new bonus chapter read by the film’s Hero Fiennes Tiffin and a letter to listeners read by Anna Todd.

There was the time before Tessa met Hardin, and then there’s everything after.... Life will never be the same. #Hessa

Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.

But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, and tattoos, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.

But he’s also rude - to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does - until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss, it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.

He'll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.

Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin's prejudice about nice girls like her?

Unless...could this be love?

Terrible message. Don’t let your daughters read this.

Yet another story showcasing a man treating a woman like absolute crap and her just eating it up like candy. Lovely Anna Told, help teach another generation of young ladies that when a guy is mean to them and abusive to them then that means he must actually be madly in love with them. Don’t read it, don’t let your daughters read it. I got halfway through and had to stop before my eyeballs fell out of their sockets from rolling my eyes so much.

Terrible

If you don't want to rip every single hair out of your head from how annoying this book is, don't read it. It's just a repetition of them fighting and making up, then having sex and fighting and making up again. She is honestly the biggest idiot I've ever read about, absolutely infuriating. Can't even describe how bad this book it, as well as the following books in the sequels. SAVE YOURSELF!!!

Could not get into it

The narrator sounds like a robot. No emotion or personality. Couldn’t even give it a chance. Wanted to like it but couldn’t.

I. Can’t. Even.

And you shouldn’t either. I’m a big fan of a good YA novel, but this nonsense is less YA novel escapism and more “Best Ways to Convince Yourself To Stay in an Abusive Relationship.” Y’all. It’s awful. The reader sounded like she was talented, but I honestly wonder how many times she needed to take a break during recording to gag. There was ZERO character development. Hardin was an idiot— I don’t care if he had a mysterious British accent. I’ll end this review here as I am heading to the ophthalmologist soon— I’m afraid I sprained my eyeballs from rolling them so many times trying to listen to this drivel.

Juvenile

I totally understand all the rage from teens and young adults about this love story. My maturity as an older, sexually experienced woman, this novel is extremely unrealistic from a sexual POV. I actually finished this book because I was curious as to what Hardin’s secret was. The storyline is ok, but definitely could have been better put together. Sorry, no woman as inexperienced as Tess can actually orgasm that soon into a sexual relationship. As for Hardin, his sexual releases are on point (mere minutes) for his age. The writing was no Pulitzer winner but I’ll give this novel 3 stars. Anna Todd is clearly a new author but has excellent potential. I’ll go ahead and skip the next in the series, and look into more of her novels later in her career.

Mixed feelings

The story, which was originally One Direction fanfic, is about teenagers, so obviously it is going to seem a bit immature to adult readers. The exceptions are the erotic moments, which are very steamy but a bit repetitive. I can’t say I loved the book, and even found quite a bit of it frustrating. I found myself wanting to shake sense into both of the main characters. I’m not even sure I would say I particularly enjoyed it, and all the overdone drama left me feeling exhausted. Despite that, I could NOT seem to stop listening and when it ended I immediately downloaded the next. There were touching moments and moments that made me cry, all of which brought back the roller coaster emotions that come with first love. I suppose I was more invested than I thought I was or even wanted to be. I am fairly certain I will finish the series, but it won’t be one that I read again and again the way I do with most books.

Story is good but

I feel like the story is good buttt it’s weird every time she’s upset with Hardin they have some type of sexual experience making it seem that is the only way she’s willing to forgive him. I felt like the story dragged on but overall was good and I’m looking forward to watching the movie and listening to the next book

Good but...

I saw the movie trailer about this novel and I love when good novels are turned into great movies, not that the movie has been released yet. However, I never read the novel and I wanted to know what was so great about it that it got to be created into a motion picture. I loved the narration even though it's all told from her POV until the very last chapter. I did have several eye rolling moments when I worried this novel would be too young adult for me , but though I think she was kinda naive it did seem like true struggles college students may find themselves dealing with. I loved that her characters growth development made her stronger and able to better stand-up for herself. I struggled with why she was so intrigued by him b/c he irritated me several times throughout the story and the cliffhanger at the end never revealed what was really true about their relationship and what she learned about him that made him so messed up, like did that really happen to his mother, etc. I also thought it would end more dramatically like he was a sex addict in a weird sex relationship with the pink hair girl that annoyed her and the bad boy that he seemed so intimidated by only it came back to silly games like they were all still in high school. Then I thought it would end with a car accident but instead she left her car which didn't make sense b/c the guy she left with wasn't really her friend and she'd need her car to pack up and get away from the apartment but the book just left it all in the air in a most unrealistic way. I'd be so hurt I'd never want to see any of them again let alone drive off with someone who wasn't honest with me, it's that why she was mad at S too but I guess it didn't matter for Z. I don't know. The story has true potential but I guess the characters were too immature for me. To still let peer pressure and lies go that far is just baffling to me, but they're still young so I guess he was true clueless how to get out of it. Smh. Hopefully, the movie has a different spin on it. Not sure if there is a sequel but I think the author should have just summed it up in this book. Oh well.

I loved the emotion and great use of adjectives.

Heros' last chapter reading was amazing and filled with emotion it was interesting hearing how Hardin felt about the entire situation.

BEST BOOK EVER

This book is amazing! This is one of the best love stories you’ll ever read. It explores real relationship problems and has so many twists and turns which leaves you in one big emotional mess but it is all worth it. Make sure to read the whole series because it only gets better. Anna has done such an amazing job!
