I couldn't finish it
I tried, I really did. When it started going all Yoda and Luke, I started getting eye strain from rolling my eyes. It was turning into a star wars wannabe.
Mark Boyett is an excellent narrator, but even he couldn't change my opinion of this book. I got 5 hours in and couldn't listen to the rest.

Citing Shakespeare doth not make you sophisticated
I know there's a lot of very positive reviews here, which is why I gave the series a shot. But in truth I only made it 4 hours into the first book before I gave up on it. The writing just isn't believable or cohesive. The writer doesn't really know what the story or the characters should really be. Instead it reads like a bunch of moderately disjointed story elements held together with spackle and duct tape. While it's not the worst I've seen, it still had me wincing a couple too many times for me to keep going.
Now if you're not looking for an intense read there are still some interesting ideas lurking just under the surface so maybe your experience fairs better. But for me, this story really needed some more time to bake before being written because it's too raw for my tastes.

Enjoyable light headed space opera that doesn’t push scifi norms
The Unsung by Scott Bartlett is a first person science fiction story set in the future, where humanity is divided between living in the real world, and a virtual reality world. By uploading yourself to giant servers, one lives out ones life in a ‘better’ reality with everything one could wish for. Of course, despite being the far future, there are still real life pirates around..
We follow Commander Joe Pikeman, a guy who’s very old school anti-‘virtual life’ minded, and his mission to track down the pirates who have destroyed his home town. We encounter pirate lords, have space battles, hear about a very cliché daughter/wife plot, and get a tour around this highly digitalized world.
The book as such wasn’t bad. It is pure space opera, with space battles, plenty of action, virtual life styles, and a good mixture of future technology. The main character is likeable, and something is happening on almost every page, along with plenty of action scenes. In addition I found it quite well written, with scenes and dialog flowing very nicely.
The plot wasn’t too complex, but I frankly found the entire scifi side of it too superfluous. The ideas are no where near novel, and most of them have been overused way too much. The upload to the virtual world wasn’t fleshed out sufficiently, and the space pirates and space battles was run of the mill. And the main character acts like he’s a superhero. And then there was the very cliché daughter and wife side plots. For some reason the teeange daughter is Indiana Jones, a super hacker, super spy, etc., which didn’t fit at all, as if she came straight out of a super cliché young adult book.
The first four chapters were mostly info dump, and there wasn’t much of a story to start things up with. In general the whole book was riddled with a lot of useless and forced details throughout, so I got the feeling that the author had done a lot of random world building, and wanted to include it all. I think another good round of editing would have done good. Second part of the book was the best for me, when all the minor useless details got out of the way, and the story was the center.
I listened to the audiobook version, and really enjoyed the narration by Mark Boyett, which fit the story quite nicely.
For fans looking for a well written, light headed scifi space opera with a plot that isn’t too deep, but with a story that will keep you guessing as to where it is going, with a likeable main character, this is a good pick. Just don’t expect something completely novel that pushes any litterary boundaries.
I received this audiobook for free, in return for a review.

Interesting story of duty being enemy of the good
Scott Bartlett creates a wonderful tale surrounding a conflicted and emotionally-hindered father who has chosen a life of a societal defender that will provide for the care of his daughter but will keep him away for long periods of time. Further complicating the problem is that his wife was forced to upload herself into a galactic digi-sphere, thus relinquishing her mortal form. and leaving their daughter to be raised by her aunt. Mark Boyett performs another superb job at narrating this story.
What we have here is a man who is haunted by his loss of his wife and, in reality, his daughter and his decision to choose a life of unemotional solitude coming to crash into each other just as his strong-willed, precocious daughter reaches adolescence. Oh, and let us throw in an existential humanity threat on a galactic level that our protagonist, Joe, finds himself at the center of.
What follows is a thrilling and exhilarating series of events that kept me intellectually stimulated and adrenaline pumped throughout.
Onto book 2.

Great Book even for those not THAT into Sci-fi
I absolutely loved the book. Im not massively into Sci-fi but the premise of the story caught my eye and I am glad I gave it a listen to. The story. The characters. The premise of the book itself was amazing. I already recommended it to a few friends of mine and I finished the book in only a couple days. I ate it right up. Its worth giving a listen to. I plan on getting the next two books on my next subscription renewal.

Needs just a little more polish
I will preface this review with the fact that I am a huge fan of Scott Bartlett and Mark Boyett. The Ixan stories are among some of my favorite. I felt that this story was just missing something though and possibly could be the result of needing just a little bit more polish. The premise is interesting and fun, but there are so many different reveals and such that there are times the story gets very disorienting. Perhaps the first person point of view might be one of the issues as well because during action scenes is when it becomes most difficult to follow. I will probably still check out the rest of the series because there is a great deal of promise here.

Excellent narrator and good start to series
I listened to the audiobook and absolutely loved the narrator. Mark Boyett did an excellent job with the story and especially all the different voices. I will definitely be looking for more books narrated by him.
As for the story, it was definitely interesting even though the world building was confusing at times. Sometimes I would get mixed up between the Real, the Subverse, who were pirates and what was going on. I think this is more because of me listening to it (even though I loved the narrator so much). It may have been better for me to read it so I would pay more attention to the details.
I did find Joe to be interesting, and the supporting cast were entertaining. Personally, I want a story on his daughter, Harmony.
Overall, it was an entertaining audiobook. Though the book tied most things up nicely, there were enough loose ends to follow for the rest of the series. I think I'll definitely keep the series on my radar.
I was provided a copy of this audiobook for free at my request and voluntarily left this review.

A fun mashup of alot of popular ideas
This series seems to take a note from a number of different popular Animes, TV shows and Movies and mashes them all together.
A bit Star Wars, a bit Matrix and a story of family and loyalty sprinkled in along the way. This book has a number of surprised and kept me engaged the whole time.
