Publisher's Summary
You can't fight what you can't see. And Gabriel Raines can't be sure just who's setting the fires in his new real-estate development. When two fires hit back-to-back, he knows it's personal, but any number of competitors or ex-employees could be the arsonist. The police suspect Angel Ramirez, a local teen who's been in trouble before. But Mattie Baker, a volunteer at the Family Abuse center, just can't believe the kid she's been working with would go back to his delinquent ways. Determined to convince Gabe that she's right, Mattie must get close to him and find out who's putting their neighborhood in jeopardy. And just as the arsonist's flames continue to burn, they find a heat developing between them. It might just turn into a full-fledged fire… if they can survive long enough.

Great Audio!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of Against the Fire to be better than the print version?
Audio version always better then the print version because I seldom have time to just sit and read. The audio gives me freedom to do other things while I listen to a book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Against the Fire?
I loved the background story about Sam and Tracy where Tracy finally trusts Sam not to hurt her.
What does Jack Garrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I loved what Jack brought to the story....he does the story very well.

Date Rape
Evidently Ms. Martin believes that date rape is an erotic, romantic experience that women enjoy. When Mattie said NO to a sexual encounter, Gabe raped her without remorse, stating that he KNEW that she really didn't mean NO.
Sadly, it seems that another female author is promoting the degrading myth that women are too stupid to make decisions about their own bodies and, of course, that men know best. Ms. Martin stated that Mattie was JUST A WOMAN who was too weak from dealing with the stress of a professional career to manage her personal life.
While Ms. Martin is obviously intelligent and talented, she doesn't seem to like or respect her own gender, suggesting that women's only purpose in life is to serve the needs of men as sexual or domestic servants.

Wish I hadn't bothered with this one
I doubt I'll bother finishing this poorly written and ridiculously poorly read story. The characterization is shallow, the cliched descriptions never stop, and the misogynistic view is annoying at best and offensive at worst. What a waste of time and a credit.

narration very good
I would have loved this book except I do not like the sexual promiscuity of the characters . I love romance not so much lust . The lack of morals is very off putting to me .I realize there is a whole different standard to sexual behavior now ,but, I cannot separate my ideals . I have to acknowledge this is my problem and the book was well written and and I really liked the narration. Did not have a feeling of a romantic lasting relationship between the hero and heroine.

A bit boring
I really liked the first book in the series, this I got the feeling the author threw in all the passion and love scenes to make the book longer. It actually got boring, I like the narrator. I did get the third book in the series hope it gets better than this one .

Good story.
I liked Gabe Raines when we met him in book 1. The Raines brothers have all turned around rough childhoods and become successful in their right. Gabe runs a construction company and his latest project is being targeted by an arsonist. This leads him to architect, and volunteer at a family abuse center, Mattie Baker. The pair team up to prove that a teenage boy is innocent. So what if the attraction between Gabe and Mattie is palpable...Gabe doesn’t have relationships. Follow this couple as they solve a crime and fund love in the process. Good story, albeit a bit slow paced un the beginning.

Oh Kat, please say it isn't so!
I almost didn't buy this book because of the cover. It is supposed to represent one of the Raines brothers who so far, seem to be blue eyed, 6 foot +/- , successes in the Board room and Bedroom. All descriptions to date describe flattering haircuts, short and almost military in appearance. So where in the world did that male abomination come from that's on this book cover?! That figure looks as though he's been living along the river or camped under an overpass and stayed far, far away from soap and water! The hair is in greasy, over long clumps. The five o'clock Shadow and currently popular male facial hair don't even come close to being attractive, much less sexy! This male figure more closely resembles a bum from mission row than a central male drop dead gorgeous protagonist. The story behind this revolting cover is the usual Kat Martin four to five star work. The atrocious cover hides it and probably has discouraged new listeners. Please Kat, if this is in your sphere of power, REPLACE that cover. Now on to the next Raines.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Another good listen. This is Gabe and Mattie's story. Suspense, action, romance and sex.
I love to listen to Jack Garrett's narration.

CONSTRUCTION AND DESTRUCTION
Mattie is a woman burned and is content to live her life for her job and for the families of abuse organization she volunteers for. Gabe owns a construction business and needs to find the S.O.B. setting fires to his current projects. Their paths cross when a young man Mattie has helped in the past is accused of the arson. He is quickly cleared but Gabe can't quit thinking of Mattie. As they work together to solve this investigation, they begin a very steamy relationship. As the fires continue, Mattie lets her guard down when it comes to Gabe.
