Publisher's Summary

At age 26 Agatha Raisin has already come a long way. She has clawed her way up since leaving the Birmingham slum where she was born. She's lost her Birmingham accent, run away from her drunken husband, and found a job at a public relations office as a secretary. Then her boss asks Agatha to go to the home of Sir Bryce Teller to tell him that he is soon to be arrested for the murder of his wife and that the agency no longer wants to represent him.

Teller, impressed with the pugnacious Agatha, asks her to handle PR for him and even offers her an office and tells her she can hire a staff. Certainly the best thing Agatha can do for her first client is to find out who really murdered his wife and clear his name. And with her wits and gumption, Agatha sets out to do just that.

New York Times best-selling author M. C. Beaton's character Agatha Raisin is beloved by millions, and this brand-new short story takes us back to where it all began with Agatha's first case.

Love it

So this is how it all began, I enjoyed listening to this before I moved on to the regular novel. I just turned 50 so its nice to finally have a strong woman who can hold her own.

I cant wait to keep listening to Agathas adventures.

great intro to the series

Really enjoyed this introduction to the series! There's 34 books that I could find in the series so far, it being November 2023 right now. It's a fun cozy mystery set with humor. I will look forward to more. she isn't the most likable person but she's certainly fun with her escapades. I also like that this book is short. :-)

very quick mystery

this was the quickest mystery I've ever listened to. I thought it would be complete, but was pleased it wasn't. was hoping she would team up with the police, but oh well, still good.

Cute little tale

A quick little read; mostly enjoyable and well-narrated for Audible by Alison Larkin. The mystery was well thought-out, but there was an odd bit about a lesbian bar that came off more homophobic than comedic.

Not a fan

I found the views of the character dated - and felt uncomfortable with her sexist, homophobic points of view. In fact I initially thought it was set in Edwardian times (where maybe some of those opinions could be more excused?) until the mentions of computers in bubble wrap.

Also the narrator was a tad too old to be in narrating a book about a 28-year-old, but her narration was aok.
