I’d give anything to experience this story for the first time again
I went into Alchemised expecting something dark and immersive, but what I got was a story that completely consumed me in the greatest possible way. This is not a light listen. It’s brutal, emotionally relentless, and beautifully written (check trigger warnings, and please be kind to yourself as you listen). Helena Marino is a former Resistance healer now imprisoned in a world ruled by corrupt necromancers and fractured by war. Her memories are missing, and the truth she’s forgotten may be more dangerous than anyone realizes. I had to stop, breathe, and sit with my feelings during some emotionally intense moments before continuing. Saskia Maarleveld’s performance was the icing on top of this already all-consuming debut. And that ending? I clapped while I cried because I couldn’t believe the journey we had just taken.—Patty R., Audible Editor

Saskia Maarleveld voice is absolutely perfect for this story. This story is long and dark. Definitely not intended for everyone's enjoyment. But if you can stomach the horrors the character development and relationships are masterful.

The Perfect Narration: Heartbreaking & Beautiful

Narration is amazing!!! Finally a reader who speaks at a more normal human speed 😍

Detailed and thorough world building, with a complex and nuanced “nobody was completely good/right… some bad guys were justified, some good guys went too far, eventually everyone lost sight of their morals in order to just win at all costs” view of the war. The sense of bleak hopelessness in realizing “winning” wasn’t worth it is hauntingly woven throughout and has suchhhh deep impacts on every character (not just a “yeah it was awful and people died, but anyways, back to the adventure!” Style often seen in modern fiction and especially modern romantasy). The characters are shaped by their pre-war pasts, which are complex and nuanced with prejudice, allowing room for them to now be adults with regrets and insecurities about choices years before the book even takes place, but that have real impacts on how they respond when they had/have no “good” options, but still have to choose a path forwards. The hard choices they’re forced to make on page also TRULY change them irrevocably and you can see the characters evolving in response to everything they’re faced with.

So much happens “between the lines” of the writing, the author does a masterful job of subtle “show don’t tell” throughout the whole story. Establishing the distrust/paranoia between “allies” we meet is so well done, allowing the reader to dig into what could be happening “elsewhere” and to determine the alignments and motives of the secondary characters. I LOVE that the author doesn’t spell things out like they expect readers to be complete idiots who will miss any clues more subtle than a brick to the face.

I think the bad reviews may have expected the “brain off” type of fantasy/romantasy with happy endings and lots of rainbows to break up the clouds. This book is a dark adult fantasy about the horror of post-war society under a dictatorship…. It’s meant to be bleak and complex. If that’s not your vibe, this one’s not for you.

I won’t mince this. All I can say, it’s a masterpiece. One of the few unforgettable ones that would truly live rent free in my brain for a lonnggggg time.

Helena Marino + Kaine Ferron — SenLinYu! you brought me back to loving and living in the moment while I read. This is such a wonderful experience that I would love to go back to over and over again.

The narration was superb! The voices were very distinct, you can tell who is who, how she does that?! Very professional indeed! Thank you for doing this novel, you made it so alive!

I won’t be well for a while after reading this. 😭

This book is much better than I expected, especially considering how it started off as a disjointed fanfic. The original world building and foreshadowing is fantastic, even if the storytelling is somewhat hampered by the fanfic tropes that carried over from the initial version. The more problematic points in the story eventually work, especially since the rewrite is clearly taking the vibe and plot points from the Nazi regime of WW2. I personally really enjoyed the detail of medicine and necromancy, even if it is really gross. As bad as it gets, it does have a happy ending, even if the ending seems to be an extended epilogue. It is a satisfying ending, even if the climax is hard to pin down. I would recommend it but I would get people to read/listen to the author’s note first if they’re worried about content warnings.

The narration by Saskia Maarleveld is amazing, as always. She’s one of the few female voice actors out there that does male characters so convincingly.

I did little else but listen to this book for 3 days. I could not put it down! Breathtaking, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, beautiful.

Who needs sleep?! Sleep is optional until you finish this book. It's okay to neglect all your responsibilities for this.

Beautifully sad. Devastating. Heartbreakingly hopeful. There are so many words I want to use to describe this book, and yet none, because mine won't do the story justice. It made me feel all the feels. I laughed a few times. I cried many times. Often without warning, suddenly I felt something so striking, the emotion came out of me. I'm not a highly emotional reader. Truly, a captivating read.

Yes the story is dark. It is also deep. It delves into the complexities of personal experience, the impact of trauma, the nature of humanity, the danger of greed, and the corruption of power. Meanwhile, a bond of care, love, and devotion blossoms in the ashes of existence, overcoming every ruthless hardship.
