Now settled into the sleepy Yorkshire village of Darrowby and married to Helen the farmer's daughter, James Herriot thinks he's finally got himself sorted. But life as a vet in the 1930s was never going to be easy. Story
Training as an RAF pilot in the smoke and bustle of wartime London is a far cry from James Herriot’s day job as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales. And whilst he is keen to serve King and country, James cannot help but miss his life in Darrowby – despite frequent arguments between his colleagues Siegfried and Tristan, bad-tempered cattle, opinionated farmers and the continuing saga of Cedric the flatulent dog. But most of all he misses his wife Helen; pregnant with their first child.

All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants - both two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine as we laugh, cry, and delight in the portraits of his many varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

Story
Welcome back to the village of Ballybucklebo. Come and say hello again to Dr. O'Reilly's odd-as-two-left-feet patients; his housekeeper, Mrs. "Kinky" Kinkaid; and O'Reilly's pets: Arthur Guinness, the beer-swilling black Lab, and Lady MacBeth, the demonically possessed white cat. And of course, to young Dr. Barry Laverty. After Barry's first month as an assistant to crusty Dr. O'Reilly, he has been offered a permanent spot. But Laverty's excitement is dashed when one of his patients unexpectedly dies.

Story
Barry Laverty, M.B., is looking forward to his first Christmas in the cozy village of Ballybucklebo, at least until he learns that his sweetheart, Patricia, might not be coming home for the holidays. That unhappy prospect dampens his spirits somewhat, but Barry has little time to dwell on his romantic disappointments. Christmas may be drawing nigh, but there is little peace to be found on earth, especially for a young doctor plying his trade in the emerald hills and glens of rural Ireland.

Publisher's Summary
The inspiration for the BBC series of the same name.
Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semiferal cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James find he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him. And when he meets Helen, the beautiful daughter of a local farmer, all the training and experience in the world can't help him....
Since they were first published, James Herriot's memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Creatures Great and Small is a heartwarming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain's best-loved authors.

Fascinating and still relevant today
The memoirs of a country vet were immortalised by James Herriot in these books, and read by the actor that played him in the TV series 30 plus years ago. The charm of this book remains undiminished, and shows how little time has changed things - farmers continue to be farmers, animals know nothing of the passage of time and the perils of dealing with both still rings true. Hilarious and touching in equal part, this is a true British classic.

If You read James Herriot you'll love this
I have read every James Herriot book. I have loved them since I was very Young. I remember my Dad reading them at night in the winter and hearing him chuckle as he read them. When I heard over the radio one morning that the author had passed away I actually cried. RIP and thank you so much for your legacy of love and laughter and such sweet memories.
Growing up on a farm as I listen to this audible book it is so vivid and enjoyable.
I highly recommend it AND I was pleased that the narrator's voice was exactly as I imagined my beloved author's character would sound. You won't be disappointed worth every penny ENJOY

A radiator of warmth and kindess
I read this as a lonely lad sent away to boarding school in the 1980's, James Herriot was a terrific companion.
Rereading this in the world of 2018 it was even better than I remembered it.
Great characters; human and animal, difficult cases, detective work, suspense, romance, comedy, booze and buckets of charm, this wonderful book has it all. Highly recommended.

Enthralling
What a lovely book and so well read! It made me laugh out loud in public at times and had just enough details about veterinary science of the time to be interesting and not so much as to take away from the story. Characters have great depth of description. A book that really deserves a cup of tea and a comfy chair.
