Publisher's Summary

Half a million dollars will be Celeste Thorne’s reward for spending four years of her life in total isolation. No faces. No voices. No way to leave.

Since Celeste has never really worried about being alone, the generous paycheck she’ll receive for her participation in the solitary psychological experiment seems like easy money.

When she finds an injured hiker in the woods bordering her living compound, her strictly governed world is thrown into disarray. But even as she struggles with the morality of breaking the rules of the experiment, Celeste can’t deny her growing attraction to the kind and enigmatic Olivia Soldano. Still, how much can you really trust a stranger? And how much can you trust yourself when you know all the faces you’ve seen and voices you’ve heard for the past three years have only been your imagination?

But what’s real? Celeste’s reality may lie somewhere between the absolute truth and a carefully constructed deception.

More detailed sex than I expected

Interesting premise of a story, but the long minutes of detailed lesbian sex were not what I was expecting in this book. Basically, it is a romance story.

Superb

This was the first E.J. Noyes novel I've read, and I am absolutely hooked. The writing is beautiful and natural, and this tale is captivating. Abby Craden lends her usual high calibre to the storytelling, and I'm so glad I went with the audio version. She added even more depth to an already immersive novel.

Phenomenal story!

This was suuuuuch a good tale. I found myself really relating to Celeste's struggles with loneliness, and the pain of not feeling connected with others. And her relationship with Olivia was to die for! The narrator, Abby Craden, did a beautiful job bringing the characters to life. Amazing all around!

Borderline Experience

This book felt exactly what's it's like to have Borderline Personality Disorder. Celest would have been diagnosed with it on her first session with a psychiatrist.

Exceptional storytelling!

I'm blown away by how talented both Abby Craden and E. J. Noyes are! Abby has a way of pulling words off paper with flourish and unfolding a scene you can see and feel using just her voice. She had me feeling all kinds of ways!
The story itself is one of the best I've ever come across. The plot was refreshing and raw in moments and had me reaching for a tissue more than once. I felt the backstory of Celeste's mom and sister played an integral role in her character and gave us believable reasons of why she'd choose to do the experiment in the first place. Excellent book, and one I'll recommend for years to come!

Great listen!

This book has a great storyline. I have never listened to female/female romance before and I think it's very tastefully done. The story isn't all about the sex, just nicely placed throughout. I seriously could not stop listening to this book! The writer has you wrapped the entire time. Very nice listen.

Beautifully written

I have reread this book. It astounded me that E J Noyes has the imagination to come up with this concept. Living all alone for three years. The performance by Abby Craden was perfect.

Cringey

The story had so much potential. It lured you to think that you were going to engage in the delirium that one might experience when left alone for too long; a psychological torment of not being sure what is real versus imagined. Instead, you get a tale that’s so weak and lifeless, you’d think it was written by an amateur romance novelist. The narrator’s bad performance made the listening experience even worse. Definitely leave this one…alone!

This book touched me deeply

I chose this book because the of someone living in deliberate isolation for a period of years intrigued me. I identified with Celeste and became very fond of her. When she became involved with another woman in the story I was right there with her, feeling what she felt and so happy for her. Then, when what I expected turned out to be true, I felt her anguish and her pain. This book is beautifully written and performed. I want to devour everything I can find written by E.J. Noyes and I want to hear every performance of Abby Craden.

Audio book even better

I thought that reading a book could not be improved on. I was wrong. Abby Craden has brought this excellent book to life. I cannot think of a better narrator to do EJ Noyes books into the audio world. This book should be number one in a number of categories not just Lesbian Romance. I have already preordered EJ’s next book and can’t wait.

Alone...Very Intense!

I really like E.J. Noyes as an author and Abby Craden as narrator. That is a great combination. That said, I wasn’t certain I could handle the “alone” theme for 3-4 years. Picture this: no faces, no music, no tv, no Internet, no phone. Yikes...no phone! Celeste had the motivation to try, and with difficulty succeeded....until a stranger arrived. Celeste questioned her sanity, worried about breaking rules of her contract, and made her decision. I really liked the book and the varied emotions conveyed. The story will grab you and keep ahold until the last line. And Abby Craden...is spectacular!

Drawn out lesbian love scene

I bought this having no clue what it was about. The synopsis seemed interesting and the reviews were stellar. The entire book was a drawn out love scene. There were no details the main characters backstory. There were only quick glimpses into her former life. However, every single detail was given about sexual thoughts and actions. It wasn’t awful, but wasn’t what I expected.

Meh!

Wasn't a bad book but just long and drawn out. While the plot was an interesting one and could've had so many twists, it was so slow and almost boring in some parts, eventually being somewhat anticlimactic. The narrator was fabulous tho, she is on eof my favorites, so I expected no less. Overall, I would not waste an entire credit on this, maybe if you catch a sale.

Interesting, thrilling listen in the time of social distancing

Picked this book because seemed of interest as social isolation was being recommended for covid pandemic. Wasn’t sure as Noyes is a new author for me and found it’s plot much more intriguing than initially thought - the twists and reveals were very well done. Abby Craden’s voice as always was wonderful. Would definitely recommend.

Well done

A very intriguing read that I enjoyed immensely.
E.J. Noyes has written a page turner that will have you laughing one minute and sniffling the next.
And Abby Cradens narration is the proverbial icing on the cake. A must read or listen (or both).

E.J. Notes "ALONE" is by far one of THE BEST books I've ever read!!! DO NOT miss the opportunity to listen to Abby Craden narrate it on audible.....I HAVE NO WORDS!!! Thank you for this book E.J., Celeste & Olivia's story reached down inside and took me places I never would have thought by imagining myself alone in the world for years! Their story of love and redemption is like nothing I've ever experienced in a book before......and I've read plenty of AWESOME lesfic!!!! Not sure how it's possible to be this FANTASTIC of a writer, but E.J. NAILS IT!!!

Excellent psychological thriller

First time I have listened to a book by this author. Her character development is marvelous, the way she shows us how Celeste coped with her abusive upbringing and how she now copes over new developments during the course of the book. What happens when Olivia is added to her private world. An interesting book for anyone looking for an unusual twist and turns in the story with a romance thrown in.

Another winner

Even though unlike many listeners I'm not a fan of this narrator, I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version of this wonderful book. Psychological (but not a thriller), emotional and beautifully exploring human feelings and reactions. I enjoyed every minute of it and I'm sure I'll listen to this book again and again. Brilliant.
