Captivating story and great narrator
I really enjoyed this book as someone who truly loves historical fiction. Great pace and intrigue kept me engaged throughout the story.
5 stars for the narrator.
Ending was a little abrupt and would make for a great sequel.
I will definitely search out other books by this author.

Eye-opening historical novel on war with Japan in the Philippines
I was riveted to this Philippine story, a twist on most WWII stories taking place in Europe. We, the spoiled generations, including myself, need to have this emotional experience of those who fought, suffered and died for the United States in order for us to live as well as we do. If we don’t heed these caution stories, ignorance will be our weakness and downfall. I appreciate my eyes being opened in such an excellent, exciting but devastating story form. I applaud the narrator who kept me riveted throughout the tale. The personal growth of the main character is shared by the personal growth of the reader by the ending.

Did not want this one to end!!
Great story! Great narration! I've pretty much exhausted the WW2 Historical Fiction books that take place in France, Poland, and Britain, and was hesitant to delve into the Pacific side of the war. Now, I'm frantically searching for more books like this one!

Found little to sympathize with.
Besides the irritating chronic “breathy” narration during any dialog, the entitlement of these women kept me from enjoying this book. They all have maids to “help” with one child and demanding shopping days. After Pearl Harbor and bombing of Manila, these ladies decide to leave. Of course they need their maids,even tho they make them leave their own families, including elderly parents, “I can’t do this alone” poor me. After trips to the banks and emptying their safes of much elegant jewelry, loading the cars, its time to flee. Sorry, I couldn’t give a flip about their impending “struggle”.

Strong Women Aid Guerrillas in Philippines
Strong women support the allied forces in Manila. Gina didn’t think she could do it but she returned to Manila from the guerrilla camp, opened a night club, wooed the Japanese officers and sent the information gained and the money to the guerrilla forces in the mountains. Gina left her 9 year old daughter with her best friend in the mountains while Gina made her way among the occupied Japanese soldiers risking her life with every step. She became a spy of sorts in the network that helped the prisoners keep faith. She survived imprisonment and along the way found her inner strength. I listened to the audible version read by Sarah Mollo-Christensen and felt that I was in the midst of the war. We never know how strong we are until challenged. Great story about WWII in the Philippines and the hidden camps fighting the Japanese.

Tough details but we should all hear this book
If you ever want to have a reason to promote peace in the world, this book reminds us of the real details of war.

A Well Done Book
I found that I really enjoyed this book. Well done by a fresh author. Good pacing and a credible story on a part of the war we don’t read much about.

The setup of this complex situation takes a bit to get in place, but stick with it. it is worth the wait.

Powerful rollercoaster of a! story
I enjoy historical fiction and this is a great story about how families from many countries were affected by WWII in Manilla.
Painfully depicted details make you feel like you are in the midst of the war-time experiences.
Told with compassion, honesty, sorrow and joy.
